Nice, I can see you're online :)

So this skype thing, is it voice only or text chat too?

Yes, it's both of those, plus it will transfer files.  Like Jules, I don't use it often but it can be a real boon at times.  Used it a great deal when my daughter was in Australia.  Also been doing work for a big company and talk to a couple of guys in the USA.  Whilst talking you can send file to help explain things.

Pay money and you can text or call land lines.

The on line thing can be changed via the Skype control panel to various conditions ... Away, Do not disturb, Invisible etc.  So it's not as Big Brotherish as it may seem!

You know what a technophobe I am, but I do rate Skype.

Extension's doing fine ... got half a kitchen and a floor now.  Currently putting in a cable capable of running the national grid to supply the fancy hob she liked the look of.  Bloody thing uses more than twice the current my processor does!

Disco's another matter.  Engine's running rough and despite changing half the ancillaries, I can't work out why.

As for bits falling off, funny you should mention that ... I noticed yesterday a major part of the plate holding the fuel tank in place was hanging down, having rusted through.

disco a 4 or 5 ? what engine is it / year?

whats the problem you have? my neighbour has had discos (currently a 5) guy / mechanic...

Er, 1 ... 300TDI.

It's behaving like a petrol engine missfiring on one cylinder.  Had it on the last Disco and it was the IP playing up.  On this one I've changed the IP, all the injectors, cleaned the sedimenter and changed the filter, still no luck.

I'll check the tappets, but I doubt that's the problem.  Now thinking about buying a J, Jeee, Jee,  Jeeeee ... American car because I've heard they are so relyable!

You should try the same age Transit, guaranteed to have none unless someone has welded in new ones!

I'm Julian, not Charlie ... ooh, Déjà vu!

If it was the timing it would be generally rough (awaits sarcastic comment from the Cotswalds), this defiantly feels like a problem with one cylinder.  It does have that filter, except it's not really a filter.  It's the sedimenter I mentioned.  It's really just a catch pot for water etc.  Velocity of the fuel slows right down water and crap drop out and I think the fuel is drawn off from near the top.

Thought I'd snuck in with an unnoticed name change, but you've been rumbled!

Julian, it's not blowing out of the back of the engine between the block and head is it? The engine is well known for blowing the head gasket if it has been even slighlty overheated and one place it can go is out the back of the engine from number 4 cylinder. It will make a ticking noise too.

Really you need a compression test to confirm if it's head gasket related.

When I changed the head on mine (which had gone porous) I was quite surprised to see impact marks from number 1 exhaust valve on number 1 piston. None of the other valves had been touching, just that one but it certainly explained the metallic tapping sound the engine had been making up to that point.

It has most certainly gone off topic

Julian (The BRTP one), is this a car repairs thread?

You started it on the first page by asking if anything had fallen off my car!  I had the choice of looking rude and advising you that you were taking the thread off topic or answering honestly.

I'll know how to reply in future!
