Julian, make sure that you can still account for all 8 valve caps (the little hardened discs that sit on top of the valve stem and that the rocker bears on.
The last thing you want is to replace the head and pushrods only to find a valve cap has dropped down a pushrod hole and is jammed against the cam follower in there.
If the ends of any rockers are snapped off then there is a realistic chance of the valve cap being knocked off and laying around the valve gear somewhere.

Pete and Jules, appreciate the thoughts of help.  Decided to replace the head complete with valves etc (current head suffered from broken valve guides), all push rods and I've allowed for two left and two right handed rockers along with new belt and tensioner and a couple of other bits.  I'll check for bio leaks from pump and swap back to the old one if it's an issue.

Is this thread going off topic at all?

think hes changing whole head for seconhand complete

What a mate, thanks Keith, that's brilliant.

The parts should be here today.  I've arranged to borrow a trailer off a chap in the village and my mate next door (with a Disco that runs) has offered to tow it.  We'll aim to leave after the rush hour on Thursday to be with you between 11:00 and 12:00am ... trust you'll have the kettle on!

I've got a few special tools I'll bring ... timing pins and the large spanner for the viscous fan etc.  Is there anything else you'll need.

Mrs Julian can drive me back down on the Sunday evening to collect it.  It's a new head, timing belt and tensioner, I recon I could do it in that time, so it should be a breeze for a man of your talents!

I've got the address of Tosser Towers, but can you PM me your mobile so I can confirm arrangements just before we leave.

Really appreciate your assistance and looking forward to the 2nd hand smoke!

I knew the sentiment was genuine, but not seriously practical.  Did anybody win the bluffing game?

I've got a lovely, warm, well quipped garage ... it's so well quipped that I can't get the dammed car in there.

Thanks for the info, Paul.

I know I might have got away with two or three push rods @ circa £1.85 ea + VAT, but given issues obviously experienced by the previous owner and inherited by me plus the current misfiring problem, I decided to go for broke on the parts front!

My garage is so "well equiped" that I can't get in it to get the equipment, meanwhile I work on the roadside with three spanners and a big hammer!!

A draw perhaps then?

At the risk of prolonging an off topic thread ... just found out why the cam belt went.  The outer flange from the crankshaft pulley had detached it's self and was sitting in the bottom of the timing cover in half a dozen mangled pieces.  This collection of scrap had worn the width of the timing belt down to nearly half size and the resulting swarf looked like a mouse was nesting in there!  Result ... 1 broken rocker and 4 bent push rods.  All the lash caps are accounted for, Jules .. thanks for the tip, but one seems strangely rough and pitted.

That sounds nasty - but at least you have an explanation, even if it does mean a new crank pulley (make sure you do that bolt up serrrioouuuuussssllly tight).

The engine damage sounds minimal too.
It does sound odd why one valve cap is looking in poor condition, could it be that one rocker was very loose? That would account for your tapping sounds and lack of power.
