Julian, it's not blowing out of the back of the engine between the block and head is it? The engine is well known for blowing the head gasket if it has been even slighlty overheated and one place it can go is out the back of the engine from number 4 cylinder. It will make a ticking noise too.

Really you need a compression test to confirm if it's head gasket related.

When I changed the head on mine (which had gone porous) I was quite surprised to see impact marks from number 1 exhaust valve on number 1 piston. None of the other valves had been touching, just that one but it certainly explained the metallic tapping sound the engine had been making up to that point.

Thanks, Jules.

I'll check the back of the head when I get a chance.  That actually sounds plausible because 1) I put the head on, and 2) the "missing" is also more noticeable on over run.

That said, at tickover it sounds as sweet as a nut.

not the timing belt 1 tooth out is it?

does sound like you tried all things...

but will have a chat with my man charlie...

also does your one have that inline filter under the back wheel arch?

I'm Julian, not Charlie ... ooh, Déjà vu!

If it was the timing it would be generally rough (awaits sarcastic comment from the Cotswalds), this defiantly feels like a problem with one cylinder.  It does have that filter, except it's not really a filter.  It's the sedimenter I mentioned.  It's really just a catch pot for water etc.  Velocity of the fuel slows right down water and crap drop out and I think the fuel is drawn off from near the top.

not always but starting is harder (timing) and those filters sorry sedimentors i will tell you what a garage says who has specialised in discos (only) for 20 years says about sediment filters from just up the road from me " dump the pain in the arse problem causing shits and jion pipe togehter." and never look back. i know 3 people who had this problem, well not your problem but fuel feeding issues / performance

do you get smoke alot out the back? just thinking rings gone or oil seal ring gone.

i will be seeing bob marley later for oil round pickup so will ask him, thats charlie in disguise he pally pally with said 20 year disco mechanic / disco parts dealer in secondhand bits. try get him to talk to him on this matter.

going to go back now and re-read your symptoms in an ealiear post.

Er, 1 ... 300TDI.

It's behaving like a petrol engine missfiring on one cylinder.  Had it on the last Disco and it was the IP playing up.  On this one I've changed the IP, all the injectors, cleaned the sedimenter and changed the filter, still no luck.

I'll check the tappets, but I doubt that's the problem.  Now thinking about buying a J, Jeee, Jee,  Jeeeee ... American car because I've heard they are so relyable!

so its a TD1 model, ok...

so same symptoms as your old vehicle but that was IP so that sorted that one... (wonder if the new IP had the fueling screws wound up???) so made it better?

ok think i got it all...

Thanks Paul,

Any suggestion at this stage would be welcome.  Compression test might point to the problem, but the last one was 50 quid, so probably cheaper to take the head off.

I'm suspecting the two aren't connected, but returning from the dreaded cardiac rehabilitation clinic, pottering along one of my favourate, quiet country lanes, ruminating on the atrocious people skills of the "skinny Barbara Woodhouse" lady who runs it, there was a sort of muffled puff and the engine stopped.

So for the delight and delectation of Discophobes and J, Jeee Jee, American car owners, ... I now have a snapped cam belt!

It never rains it pours
Am I right in thinking you can just replace the cambelt on one of those if your lucky?

Bloody hell Julian.

You are having a nightmare with that Disco

You have all my sympathy and if I were closer I would offer some spanner wielding skills to help fix the thing.

Hang in there you will get it sorted.....

Yes, it's all coming together rather nicely!

I've got a customer currently with a half finished bathroom.
A mother coming out of hospital tomorrow after a hip replacement, needing nursing for several days (no jokes about uniforms please)
An imminent job in Exeter which I've said I'll be able to attend at short notice.
And now the Disco issue which compounds the three issues.

Bad time to be 8 weeks into stopping smoking!

Thanks, Pete ... Big help!

Just placed an order for over 500 quids worth of parts and towed the Disco back home.

Shortly off to the pub, but it'll be several large Laphroaigs not JDs.

Very bad luck mate. The only reason I have known  Disco cambelt to break was bio contamination from a leaky front seal on the pump.
Maybe you did have some valve contact (dropped valve?) that caused it or somethin very terminal in the IP.

You should find that it will just be the rocker arms smashed and the push rods bent although of course you will need to check what cause the failure - mine was obvious as the timing case was full of bio.

I had it all done and back on the road within 36hrs of failure and that included the tow back to the workshop so dont be too disheartened.

If I was closer I would come and give you a hand.

Pete and Jules, appreciate the thoughts of help.  Decided to replace the head complete with valves etc (current head suffered from broken valve guides), all push rods and I've allowed for two left and two right handed rockers along with new belt and tensioner and a couple of other bits.  I'll check for bio leaks from pump and swap back to the old one if it's an issue.

Is this thread going off topic at all?
