I think Mark's train of thought was that the air bag be mounted in an air tight (and hopefully explosion proof) enclosure, the only exit from which is a tube that holds the tennis ball.  The air bag being mounted in the enclosure.

As the bag expands in the enclosure it will force air up the tube and hopefully blow the ball into orbit.

Special effects ... lucky man!  That was my dream job when I left school but alas it never happened.  You must have some great stories of the ones that didn't quite work as they were supposed to!

one memorable episode involved a large tesla coil suspended over a burning tent with a mobile crane the idea being to show how a lightning bolt can set fire to a tent. the plan was to film the strike then move the  coil a from away from the flames. unfortunately at this point the crane broke down.... lots of swearing at the crane driver and a bit of quick reversing got the coil out of way with a bit of smoke damage. the crane hire company didn't get paid.......

You're close, but the bag will be removed from the air bag unit leaving just the charge to go off inside the chamber.

Umm, explosion proof, hadn't thought about it that way.
Was just going to use some 2mm plate for the enclosure, maybe something a little thicker is in order.

Was thinking of a 6" bit off 6" box section with two 12mm plates and four 88 grade 12mm bolts.

my nephew is putting you all to shame, he built himself a flame thrower

(I didn't want anything to do with it (in case something bad happend) but he was making it anyway so gave him a hand making it safer, and got him to run diesel instead of petrol)

You must bring that to the BBB.

Mark hopefully I can get a piece of 6" box section and can fabricate the charge holder bit
can you give me the outside diameter of the pipe you have then it can be pre drilled and welded on at the BBB.

Geezus, how long does it take you to read a tape measure,  a whole week?

Cheeky old git, the pipe is not at home.

Now make yourself useful and calculate the optimum length of the pipe, or do you need to nip out and measure OD of a tennis ball before you can start.
