Mini HPT
« on: February 07, 2013, 06:11:29 PM »
I've been trying one of these for a hot pan test, now I've been banned from the kitchen.

It works quite well, but despite the advert saying that it was controllable down to 100°C, it goes way over temperature.

I could rig up a temperature controller or even a PID, but that rather seen overkill!

Can anyone with a better understanding of electronics than me suggest any modifications to get it to run at a lower temperature.

Additional photos as required.

I'm sure one of our experts could find a simple way to achieve that.

However, the 'burning' question is how and why did they pick that name!?
It looks to be made by Ningnang, so the obvious model name would have been the 'Nong'.
Brewing bio. And still not breaking cars!

On the subject of HPT I know we have to advise using the safe method but surely putting oil in a cold pan then heating would allow a lot of moisture to evaporate before reaching "spitting" temp, giving a false reading

As far as the wiki is concerned I'd say we should advocate carrying out all methods safely ... unless items/methods are proved to be positively dangerous.

However, I think you could have a point about the evaporation ... so what if I put a cold glass slide over my little solder pot and checked for condensing water?  I'd guess that might be more sensitive that a HPT.  Similarly would that be a plausible test for Methanol in Bio?

Somewhere I have a small sample of 10 or 12mm thick glass, got to be worth a try.

It's not obvious how the control system on that works - are there any markings on the TO220 device?  (The sticky out one with three legs!)

I used to have a spoon that I put in a vice and heat up with a blow torch, then use a syringe to pour in a bit of oil. I used to over do it with heat and get spitting regardless of moisture content! I then just heated the spoon (sometimes to dull red!) and then insert into sample jar! hot oil would some times splash about, but you could see steam rising. ;D

I think I will do a wiki page hahaha :P

Remember that I am not just an Iranian, I am PROFESSIONAL Iranian! I fart in the face of health and safety!

I used to make bio in what used to be a mechanics/car wash. I was generally the only person around, I used to light my cigars with the same Mapp gas torch!

Off to do a wiki page on doming the top of your processor using the power of browned underpants!  ;D ;D ;D

Thinking about the general inexpense that seems to be afforded to your device I suspect it's a triac circuit - same as used in lighting dimmer switches - in which case you're at the mercy of the capacitor regarding it's accuracy, of which there will be little!
