Tonight I've been mostly ...
« on: April 26, 2014, 10:30:12 PM »

Printing a non-glug pourer for a 20 ltr tin (I know, I need to get out more)

Quite a few rejects before the ring would clip into the tin.

Printing the pipe ... (processor coming next)

Assembled parts from the front.

Assembled parts from the back.

No idea if it will work, if it does I think it might need some sort of spout to help it pour ... I'll find out tomorrow.

Awesome!!!!    Did you buy the printer or build it.  That is too cool.

Are the parts strong?

It's not clear in the pictures but is that a chamfer with a recess grove? How easy is it to remove once the tin is empty.

It'll be interesting to see it in action with the weight of 20lts pressing on the back face.

I could find a use for one of those if ever I receive a tin of oil without stab holes in it 8)

Built it.  All the parts are readily available, I made very little (although I have modified it quite a bit since first built), so no credit can be attributed to me.  It's the guys who write the firm and software I think are awesome.

They can be very strong. You can adjust wall thickness and % fill and print several different plastics.

Flanges on this are generally 1.2mm thick to give a bit of flexibility.

Yes, the shape replicates spouts that come with the tins, but I had to make adjustments because the PLA isn't as flexible as the original plastic.

Yes, it will be interesting, the last one I tried was a little too easy to remove, so I tweaked the dimensions a little.  It won't have the full weight of the oil bearing on it as the pressure will be relieved by the pour.

I did consider attaching a piece of cord to retrieve it should it drop off, but I guess I should really have faith.

If it doesn't stay in place, I have a cunning plan for a design a bit like a rawplug, where a spout will push in and splay out some pawls inside the tin, fixing the assembly in place.

I have two or three suppliers who don't stab the tins, but the thought was that I might give one to the people who do in an attempt to stop them doing it.  To that end some sort of closing device could be a good addition.

sorry I must smile

Ahem!

Oh, God ... you were my sole inspiration too (that's two sole inspirers now).

Along with the very clever designer of the cubie (ever noticed that he handle does almost the same thing) and Jerry for his wonderful design of can during world war two, and the chap who designed the tap on my ASM and sulfuric acid drums.  Not that using those was my idea, no Sir ... that was Jules's idea.

Loads about them on the web.  Youtube and the RepRap wiki ... http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRap   You need to persevere with their wiki, it's grown to be a real monster and very difficult to navigate.

I recon you could build one for about £180 - 200, now.

But yes, it's great fun to build and the buzz of drawing just about anything you can imagine and pressing a button to make it is still a revelation to me.

Julian,

What does it actually print, and what do you buy it as?  I mean is it a powder, or a paste, granules, or what?
