Methanol.
« on: August 06, 2013, 07:38:13 PM »
I'm a tad worried that I might be inhaling too much of the stuff, and wondered if anyone could recommend a good mask/respirator/inhaler kit to use?

Cheers!

Oily.

To the best of my knowledge a filter type mask in ineffective.  Best to treat the problem at source and eliminate methanol vapour escapes.

People always joke about it, but ethanol (alcoholic spirit) helps remove methanol from your system.

This sounds good.........so if I hang off the end of a bottle of Smirnoff Blue whilst mixing my methoxide, I won't go blind or barmy?

Youre probably looking at about £65 ish for a used set.  I have a set, with a full face mask, and i think that's about what it cost me?

Obviously then you need a compressor at a remote location also.

Ah I see, didn't realise you were not just a bloke in a shed brewer.

At what point in the process are you being espoused to meth fumes ?

You need more than just a compressor.

The air needs to be dried, filtered and all oil vapor removed (all compressors put an oil mist into the out going air, this can be very harmfull over time).

Copied from specs in the listing

Waistbelt incorporates odour filter and pre-set mask air regulator

Carbon Filter Life - 1000 hours

A Coalescer filter is required to protect against the harmful effects of breathing compresses air - it is a must to protect the health of the mask user.

So it seems it has an integral carbon filter (for removing odours) but requires a separate oil mist filter.

What you linked to is just a water separator, to remove oil mist you need something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/151035718847?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item232a6e2cbf

I have no idea of the implications of not filtering the oil out, all I know is many years ago a wise old fellow told me is was hazardous to health.

I'm sure google will tell you why.

There was a longish thread a while back about masks that will filter out methanol. The general conclusion was that only a mask with air pumped through it, from an external source, would be any good.

A certain American flipped out, claiming he had a mask that would filter it out.
If you go to his website, he has a picture of the mask as his avatar...........
No idea if it is any good or not, I suspect not...........

Link to said website. His avatar isn't coming up for me, but I think he mentions tha mask somewhere.
