Got a very wierd problem with car

hi all

bear with, gonna take some explaining hehe.

one day car is ok and parked up for the night, then very next day right from the offset i can feel vibration which initially started low this can be felt via the peddles / steering wheel / and moreover the gear stick, so i guess its travelling throughout the car, now after driving for an hour odd i got repetetive strain syndrome with my left hand from gear changes due to vibration but for the life of me i cant find a problem thats causeing this, i thought maybe an injector down causeing uneven tickover as the vibration is worse stood still, when driving along its alot better but very slightly still there and uncomfortable, now over the past 2 days this has been occuring it changes! i thought maybe after the car gets hot this is why it gets worse but no, it gets worse intermitantly and sometimes can be just a slight uneveness, i have checked all 4x engine / gearbox mounts and all look good to me.

also now this vibration is there i get louder tinny noises from exhaust i think as when i red line it going through gears like someone stole me baffles lol. but as i say it doesnt do this all the time, its like the car decides when it wants to vibrate badly or not but always slightly there.

i can describe this so you know what i feel, if you have an uneven washing machine spinning it tends to bounce around till the rpm's get going.... or like your front tyres are out of balance and the steering wheel jumps and vibrates at certain speeds.

now this is the one, yesterday i was under the bonnet again and found 1 loose bolt so i did this bolt up (connects engine to gearbox) and went up the shop just a quick trip and i felt no vibration!

but may just be car deciding not to play again so today the vibration maybe back? who knows but its "driving" me nutts.

p.s. its not an injector.

Strange. Have you checked all the gearbox bolts? I assume you are talking about the pug?

I've had a very similar thing on this  Disco and the previous one, not quite as bad as you describe though.  It feels a bit like a petrol engine which is missing on one cylinder.  On the old Disco changing the IP cured the problem, but on this one I've changed all the injectors and the IP, put a new head on it and obviously visually checked the pistons etc whilst the head was off.

I still think the problem may be IP related, but I need another cheap pump to swap to confirm the fact before I look at having a pump rebuilt.

On the old Disco the most economical sequence of diagnosis was as follows ...

1) buy 1 S/H injector and sequentially swap it for all the injectors.
2) have a compression test done to eliminate piston/valve issues.
3) swap the IP which cured the problem

With the current Disco, I'm just putting up with the vibrations!

only checked the top ones and yes pug 406.

I had the same thing on my pug when I brought it, found the top two bellhousing bolts missing,
once these were replaced it went compleatly.

I had a similar problem after fitting the replacement IP to the Delica.  Lumpy at idle, something not right when unloaded at higher RPM but hardly anything noticable when under load.

Turned out to be an injector union not done up enough - it was weeping fuel.  Probably not the same on yours as I'm guessing you've not disturbed the injector system (aside form by putting veg through it!) but might be worth checking for wet patches?

Why are you so confident that it's not an injector?

Definitely worth checking the rest of the bolts on the bell housing.

once these were replaced it went compleatly.

well i may have the same as you, cos doing that bolt up has made a massive difference, its not tottally gone but its hardly anything at all, infact if someone else drove my car they wouldnt know, but i had this motor 4 years and done some serious miles in it, so i know the feel...

right will have to get car on ramps and check all these bolts out.

but would you believe it that 1 bolt can cause so much vibration, crazy...

note to self, kick the butts of the peeps who fitted my clutch 3 years back :)

Mine is a different engine/gearbox combo (2.1td  uses the same box as the 3.0L V6), but all the mounts are the same.
I did find that the other bolts weren't very tight, so the whole lot had some movement.
Allthough mine only showed up under heavy load or at 3K revs.

Mine is a different engine/gearbox combo (2.1td  uses the same box as the 3.0L V6), but all the mounts are the same.

makes me wonder if this is a known issue on these bolts? after a while they come loose and drop out? as both of ours were top bolts.

 I can think of a couple of other things that could potentially cause the problem, but there is no point in writing it all down if the slack bolts have fixed it.
