hi all

maybe got the chance of a car that smokes like shizz under heavy load (acceleration / uphill)

what would you say is part of engine at fault?

any way of finding out?

car is a VW Passat 1.9TDI (non PD engine) 110bhp

black smoke normally means a bad fuel-air mix

check the air filter first

make sure it's black smoke and not blue - check the oil

also, is it only when you push it really hard ? - someone could have tuned up the max fuel on the pump :-o

Might be EGR jammed open on grime? Amazing how black the smoke is if the EGR is open.

quick update

stood still revved upto 5500 rpm (flat out scare the neighbours) on revving up smokes black abit now and flat out no smoke if you hold engine there foot to floor...

If it smokes while boosting under load, I would think its the boost pressure sensor thinking the pressure is higher than it is.

Have you unplugged the maf to see if that makes a difference?

maf = Mass air flow sensor

Located between the air filter box and the intake, unplug it and the ecu will run at default settings so may indicate an issue with it if the problem goes away when unplugged.

Is it making any odd noises when under load and smoking?
When under load and smoking does it feel gutless?

Could be a split turbo hose or intercooler, that could cause overfueling and smoke, and make it feel sluggish.

thanks for that its all being noted, not had chance to look at it yet, my neighbour should be back today and we need to sort a flat tyre that appeared also.

this version of a vw passat is an auto gearbox...

The black smoke could be a split pipe from the intercooler to the inlet manifold. I had an issue with my 90hp engine a couple of years ago. I could hear something odd like air escaping under load, and it used to smoke real bad. Turns out it was the rubber hose just before the inlet manifold had split slightly but on the underside of it. Worth checking!
