GL or Appleseed?
« on: May 27, 2013, 07:17:39 PM »
Im going to start making bio,

Decent veg cars are getting scarce these days with not a lot of choice.

im looking at getting the wife a new car (golf, A3) and she only does local driving.

So im looking at making a small processor.
I can dewater 80litres at a time in my dewatering tank so taking into account the added meth im looking at a 100lt tank.

Can you get copper cylinders that small or can i use the 160lt tank i have lying around?

No need to restrict yourself on size.  Yes they come that small but why limit it?

Many of us go the GL route but you don't have to, if you're planning on water washing then Methanol recovery isn't a must.  On the other hand if you plan on just settling the biodiesel then you'll need to remove the Methanol.  That could be by the GL route or just air bubbling to atmosphere, though that is less environmentally/neighbour friendly.

I dont have access to water at the back of the house, so thats why i was looking at the appleseed.
im going to bubble, the shed backs onto a wooded area and a big park so isnt an issue.
Im thinking of adding extraction to the bubble tank, i have a boiler fan so and its an induction motor so no sparks.

Ventalation is a must for me, as i cant drink and the meth fumes are a big concern of mine.

Use positive pressure extraction, seal the lid and blow the air in, have another pipe venting to the outside.
This way the fan never comes in contact with meth vapors.

Watch out for relying on ambient air to do your drying.

I had some quite bad soap problems a while back when dewatering using a small compressor in humid ambients.

I found some flanges on BES for making connections on the tank, says I need a cutter.
Does it mean a hole saw?

Yeah but if your careful you can do it with a jigsaw
If its a copper tank I would do the connectors up then solder it
You can forget about it then, not have to worry about leaks and washers

What do I need to control the immersion temperature?
Can I just use the normal thermostat or or I need a PID?

I'm gonna use a copper cylinder which will the immersion pointing up from the bottom, will a 11" be sufficient?

Would a 50lpm pump be powerful enough?

And do I need an educator?
