Someone left a note on my Disco this morning asking "if I wanted to sell it, please phone this number"

People have exquisite taste round here.

Obviously wanted an LC, but budget would stretch :-))

Btw if you have an LC, especially a 100, this is a weekly event, folk walking up the drive "is your Landcruiser for sale boss", when you're at the motorway services or in Sainsbury's car park - But when you look at the residuals on a 100 series for instance vs. their rivals you don't have to explain any further.

Longevity, reliability, capability it's got to be the LC beast! LC's don't rust and they don't break - plenty of enthusiasts green-laning them  every weekend.  The 4.2TD will pull a cathedral too - No competition... which is why owners keep them for 10 years and they're as rare as the proverbial wooden horse poo, when you want to buy one - coz the owners won't let go of them!

I was given one. 

Admittedly it came with a gearbox fault (it's an auto), but even after being sat on a driveway for 5 years two batteries fitted and she still started on the first compression stroke.

After years of owning Land Rovers, I was astounded.

A mate of mine has had a Nissan Patrol, Range Rover with some engine and box out of a mistsubishi lorry in it, and a 1996 landcruiser. They were all loaded up to around their maximum weight, and frequently tow their maximum weight, and probably more.
The range rover was a bit of a dog anyway, the Patrol was very good, but the LC is in a class of it's own. He was thinking about selling it three years ago, with 400 thousand miles on it. I would have bought it if he had sold. The paintwork is still very tidy, as is the inside. He has had to have a new clutch and rear springs in the last two years.

I put a thread up on the LC forum a couple of Decembers ago asking if I was doing the right thing selling my 100 series (I've had two 100 series which have lasted me since 2001).  I was thinking of getting the awesomely powerful WV Tourag V10 - 5 litre diesel with more torque than you can shake a stick at.  I got an offer of £10,500 which other members said was cheap.  The car is a 2001 4.2 50th - I've had it since the 4.7 V8 petrol 100 series went over four years ago - it hasn't gone down in value in all that time.

Anyway, I heard horror stories about the VW (expensive turbo failures etc).  Up until last November, I was still thinking of getting rid, just for a change, but then Caroline said what u gonna replace it with... & there's the rub!  I couldn't think of anything other than another LC - maybe I'll go for a 200 series if the prices ever come down a little :-)

I have owned:

Classic Range Rover 3.9 - Constantly needed fixing, lovely car when it ran. You could never tell from day to day if it would start. 15 MPG
110 Defender pick up - 2.25 petrol, 14 MPG NOT a mistype. It was less comfortable than a tractor, it felt like going back in time, but it would happily carry a ton of stuff in the back. Bit dodgy on corners when loaded.

Now - Land Cruiser Colorado 90 - Comfortable, warm, ALWAYS starts no matter how long its left, even buried in snow. Is fantastic in the most slippery of conditions, mud or ice. 25 MPG

I will never go back to a Lawn Rover.

BTW pretty much all X5s in this part of Essex are driven by arrogant idiots and no-one lets them out in traffic...

My disco cost me £1k, with 70k on the clock.  Front half was nice, back needed chopping out and replacing for the MOT.

I looked up the LC 100, and it seemed to be about £10k??


Am i right there? Surely not??

True I wouldn't have been round the world in that time, but I wouldn't have spent the rest of my leisure time repairing my fleet of Bland Rovers either.

I once had quite a good landrover, it was a 110 coil sprung thing with a blown up v8. I put a 80 series LC engine and box in it, still not as good as a LC though.
Then there was the 40 series with a 350ci small block in it, fun! And the defender body on a LC vx chassis with 80 series engine box and axels, dubbed the "toyland".
Landcruiser every time for me.

The LCs do seem to keep their price. I think my mate gave 13 grand for it, around 12 years ago, which would have made it around 6 years old at the time, if I'm right.
I follow quite a few round the world travel blogs and forums occasionally. The seem to be bemoaning the fact that the good LCs are becoming more hard to come by, and the prices are going up. They don't seem to rate the newer ones quite the same. Too much electrics.

You can't compare the newer offerings from any of the manufacturers with pre 2000 4x4's I would not take a new Land cruiser or Landrover any where off main roads, they are not meant for that stuff any more. You may see them do it in top twats or other motoring shows but they are just not built to live on the rough stuff like the older stuff.

Although I have had 3 Surfs (4th one on the way!!!) I have always like series 3a's and defenders. Mate of mine who runs a shoot bought one and had it for a couple of months and sold it as it was not really an all round vehicle, good off road but absolutely shit on the road. Uncomfortable and made him go deaf for a couple of days after a trip to Scotland. I have never been in a disco so can't comment but been in a p38 and an 02 rangie and they are very nice inside but again lots of electrical issues and that airbag suspension seems to cause issues (another mate has had one for a couple of years and been through a couple of compressors and other suspension bits).

Where the Toyota (again I am only referring to the pre 2000 stuff) seems to fair better is that they are more comfortable and has better suspension setup than similar age landies. I did over 1000 miles in my surf in 1 week including a trip up to Newcastle and back and it was quite comfortable, I even slept the night in it in the services. It may not be as hardcore out of the box as a defender but I would trade loads of that in for a bit of comfort and reliability. The 80 series cruisers are legendary for reliability. Also remember that they are comfy have loads of extras as standard and have proven off road ability as good as anything out there.

Personally I like the LC troopies, and the Nissan patrol safaris with the 4.2 TD engines. These basically have the same sort of engines that go into 10T lorries and massive (and I mean massive) locking diffs. Not cheap and not available in the UK unless as an import.

Having waffled all that most of us don't live or drive anywhere that requires these sorts of trucks, but just because I don't need it, it doesn't mean I shouldn't have it.

If you are happy with your trucks great but you cannot get away from the fact that the UK has a humid climate and grit is used on the roads in the winter, why then did landrover not make their vehicles more rust resistant is beyond me. Also the standard of engineering on some landies leaves a lot to be desired.

P.s contrary to popular belief Toyotas do rust, mine has rusty doors!

I have a 93 Nissan patrol td42 highroof and I love it way more than my old lc4 cruiser and that was a 54 plate! Only cars I would swap for is a troopie or g wagon, both would have to be pre 2000 with zero engine management!
By the way they all rust! Thought that was what mig welder where made for!
