Looks good.
I had the thought of an airbag cannon ... large tube, end blocked, air bag as a charge and football for projectile.

Have about 30 air bags with what looks like a c02 charge they will be perfect.

I was thinking about building a vacuum cannon.

Going to need a target for this artillery ... I volunteer Head Womble!

Obviously, before or after the airbag ride?
I'm bringing some rope this year, that little fecker is gonna get his comeuppance once and for all.

Wow, a good collection and still another 6 months to go!

Oh dear ... a grope on a rope.

had a chat to a mate and can get a six or seven foot length of yellow gas pipe thick wall need to know the
diameter of suggested projectile I can see a plan combining up.

Big enough for a mangey womble.

Great minds ... that was the exact pipe I was thinking about (nice thick wall) but didn't have a source other than stopping at some road works with a big saw!
Would it be better to look at the design the other way round in that there must be a limited selection of pipe sizes, but many ball diameters? I'm happy to donate a couple of balls to the project.
This from the interweb. I think "proper" balls may be a pit pricy and they seem to have a range of circumfrances. Cheapo plastic balls would probably fit the bill ...
Size 3
Size 3 balls are the smallest balls and are generally used for children under the age of 8
These balls are generally 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces
Size 4
Size 4 balls are used for players between the ages of 8-12
Size 4 balls weigh between 12-13 ounces and have a circumference of 25-26 inches
Size 5
This is the international standard match ball for all ages 12 and older, including all adult play
The size 5 ball weighs between 14-16 ounces with a circumference of 27-28 inches
-
There you go, size 5, 1£ a shot and some really pretty colours ...

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTAwWDkwMA==/z/sJUAAOSwNgxWDufX/$_57.JPG)
Size 5 would need an 8.5" - 9" pipe if I've got my sums right. Might be better to go a little bigger as we won't be relying on an air tight fit.
-
You could always go with a smaller ball or projectile and use a sabot. Expanding foam should do the trick. It might stick to the womble's fur though...

I haven't got mange, the medication worked a treat.

Umm, I learnt a long time ago that next time a bear asks me if shit stick to my fur, I need to say no.

But where can we find a crash test dummy.

We have a "Crash Test Womble".

That's worrying.

dont worry if red bull gives you wings just think what rocket fuel cider and two or three air bags will do.

I made a device a while back that shoots squash balls.
I stopped using it when i measured the muzzle velocity at over 200mph.
I could probably put it back together again and bring it along, but its not easy to find the squash balls again....

In this case it shouldn't be a problem, wont they be embedded in the Womble?
-
When i was testing it, and taking the measurements, i was trying to fire it into wadding, so as not to have to hunt.
It did not really help.
Theres a mythbusters one on shooting balls with compressed air. They shoot into some lump of animal. The slow-motion makes you certain that its got some power. Theirs was considerably more powerful than mine, but same sort of idea.
If anyone has a line on squash balls, ill bring it along - but it would need more respect than you may imagine by looking at it.
(ie only shoot wombles if youre sure you want to deal with the mess...)
-
If we are only going to fier the wombles Balls out of the cannon it would only need to be made from microbore pipe .
Its got to be a complete womble whith the corect sized tube and enough propelant with a veretical tube we should be able to get him into orbit.
If its timed right he could give TIM PEKE a wave .
-
I can get my hands on some thick wall steel tube that's just the right size for a tennis ball, I think we all know what it's for :D
I'll see if Ican bring a mig welder and some steel plate and see what we can make.
-
If youre using compressed air, then the trick is to be able to dump the entire volume from the receiver into the 'chamber' on one go.
Its possible with a standard ball valve, but you can get mis-fires if the valve is not whipped round fast enough.
If its moved slower, then the ball is half way down the barrel before the bulk of the force it behind it.
If i were ever to build another, that is an area which i would concentrate on.
-
Sounds like it needs a ball valve with a pneumatically actuated lever to fling it round quickly.
Edit: Something like this - good for 100psi

It's for an air bag cannon, is no worries about a valve.
-
you need a reservoir to make a air cannon work well. a ball valve on a big spring held open with plastic cord and an electric fuse that melts the cord works. nichrome wire and a car battery should do it. and a long wire so if it explodes you are fairly safe. note fairly safe. something like a womble would do if the womble is otherwise engaged,ie the target. petes new transit would work.

I think Mark's train of thought was that the air bag be mounted in an air tight (and hopefully explosion proof) enclosure, the only exit from which is a tube that holds the tennis ball. The air bag being mounted in the enclosure.
As the bag expands in the enclosure it will force air up the tube and hopefully blow the ball into orbit.
Special effects ... lucky man! That was my dream job when I left school but alas it never happened. You must have some great stories of the ones that didn't quite work as they were supposed to!
-
one memorable episode involved a large tesla coil suspended over a burning tent with a mobile crane the idea being to show how a lightning bolt can set fire to a tent. the plan was to film the strike then move the coil a from away from the flames. unfortunately at this point the crane broke down.... lots of swearing at the crane driver and a bit of quick reversing got the coil out of way with a bit of smoke damage. the crane hire company didn't get paid.......

You're close, but the bag will be removed from the air bag unit leaving just the charge to go off inside the chamber.
Umm, explosion proof, hadn't thought about it that way.
Was just going to use some 2mm plate for the enclosure, maybe something a little thicker is in order.

Mark hopefully I can get a piece of 6" box section and can fabricate the charge holder bit
can you give me the outside diameter of the pipe you have then it can be pre drilled and welded on at the BBB.

Cheeky old git, the pipe is not at home.
Now make yourself useful and calculate the optimum length of the pipe, or do you need to nip out and measure OD of a tennis ball before you can start.

It's 3" OD.

Box section is ordered think I have a 3" hole saw somewhere.
What is the best material for the gasket rubber plywood or HDPE.
-
I can get an offcut of rubber conveyor belt, about 5mm thick reinforced 3 ply, that should make a good strong gasket.
What size do we want ?
I think some crosshairs on the base of the tube would be good to stop the tennis ball going into the chamber.

Bloody 'eavy though, it's the density that absorbs the sound.

For the gasket 8" x 8" would be ideal as for the crosshairs a single 8mm nut and bolt should suffice unless the tennis ball
is an interference fit in the pipe then it could loaded via the chamber prior to inserting the charge.

Don't worry Bob, I only want to see the Womble's ball flying out that tube.
-
Picked up the 6x6 box section today will weld it up and drill a 3" hole for the pipe will there be a stick welder on site to attach the
barral or have I got to give myself a herner loading the Oxford on the van.
-
I'll be bringing a mig welder, should do the job.
-
Its 7mm wall thickness may have to turn the heat up a bit.
-
7mm, that might be a bit much for the mig, it's one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clarke-Welder-240V1-100E-6010909-MIG100EMK2-/311546855246?hash=item4889a3bf4e:g:G2kAAOSwWTRWvqKB, about 25 years old.
-
What can possibly go wrong its only firing tennis balls if the weld fails its a six foot javelin.
-
Fabricated the tennis ball firing chamber today 6"x6" box section 6mm wall 8mm end plates clamped with
4x m16 studding nuts and washers.
The 3" hole for the barrel took some drilling the battery on the Dremel kept going flat.
-
Great work Oakwood (I still can't remember your name, shameful I know).
I have the barrel and gasket seal ready.
Jules, is your TIG welder man enough for welding the barrel to the chamber ?
-
No idea - I have managed to penetrate 5mm plate with it - at 160Amps
Not sure how much Argon is left in the cylinder but can bring it along if you like
-
I will be bringing the oxford bantam, in fact its sat in the boot of the truck since last BBB when it was procured!

-
It was only trippin the RCD as I was being silly with the 5 or 6 mm rods hahaha, 3.2's should be fine. Do I now need to bring the genny as well?

Mark its Richard as in my names Dick do you like it.

Sounds like you will have more charges that ammunition. If the idea works as well as expected, and we don't fire all the shots, point blank at a Womble, retrieving the ammunition could be quite a task.
I'll donate another six rounds to the cause ... it's worth two quid to excuse myself spending hours searching for balls!

Well what can I say, the collaboration of members bring parts to be assembled on site, all done without any drawings, turned into something that worked very very well.
I don't think any of us expected quite such a sceptical.
And the destruction !!!!!!!
Thanks to all that contributed, and special thanks to Richard and Edward.
So how can we improve it, well I think an adjustable stand, for aiming obviously, would be a good addition.

From Tony's post:
In a bizarre coincidence, there's this recent news on airbag recalls:
http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/nhtsa-urges-prompt-recall-certain-honda-acura-models/
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2016-06-02/sixty-million-car-bombs-inside-takata-s-air-bag-crisis (picture of a failed one).
Seems likely that they're recalled Takata units with allegedly unstable ammonium nitrate, then?
We didn't see any case schrapnel, did we? Maybe they had not degraded sufficiently.
-
The one we used as a projectile showed no degradation and it had more abuse than it was designed for.
-
Thinking of a cannon mount for next year.
New target a wall of 25ltr drums full of water.
-
The one we used as a projectile showed no degradation and it had more abuse than it was designed for.
I meant the explosive degrading, not the cases.
According to that article, the explosive used degraded in a way that, strangely, resulted in a more violent explosion, which turned some of those very solid cases into shrapnel.
