Using wet glycerol to dry oil
« on: May 20, 2018, 07:49:35 PM »
This experiment is from Chugs suggestion on the glycerol treating in bulk thread.

I mixed some water with glycerol, it ended up at about 35% water. I used some poor quality oil that showed 1500ppm water.

The oil/glyc was mixed at a 3/1 ratio at ambient temperature, then left 30 hours to settle. I re tested the oil for water and had to release the pressure valve on the Sandy Brae as it was over pressurising. I estimate the water was over 5000ppm.

Although wet glycerol can reduce water in oil I reckon I just over overdid it with the wet glycerol at 35% water.
FOC water tests by Sandy brae or Karl Fischer for forum members.

No idea of the mechanisms involved, but I've been glycerine washing for around a year using glycerine that hasn't been used for water washing and no other drying of the oil (most oil is pretty good quality).

I've not done any calculations on yield, but I just use a base weight of catalyst and volume of methanol, no other tests or checks except a 3/27 test after the second stage which 9 times out of 10 is fine.  These days I look for the least hassle in making bio and, what ever the reason, glycerine washing seems to give me that well done HC for coming up with the idea.  (what's happened to HC, not seen him post on either forum for some time now).
