Demething
« on: July 19, 2013, 05:10:57 PM »
Any of you guys got a clever way of keeping the water cold for demething? I demeth through a quad core condenser and normally demeth a 180lt batch (bio only) in a reasonable time of 2 to 3 hours. However with this very hot weather it's obviously taking longer as the circulating water is warm. My water reservoir is a 200lt water butt. At the moment i've got a hose from the mains water replenishing the reservoir and it helps but it's very wasteful and still not great. I was just wondering if anyone had any better ideas.

I bought a beer chiller, it helps but won't keep up with the evaporation rate of a 3Kw heater.  You could try pre-chilling a barrel, but again cost is an issue, chillers aren't cheap to run.

I've settled on using mains supply which is pretty constant at around 10°C.

I'm not on a meter and I'll worry about wasting the planet's resources when the water company sort their leaks out ... currently my water company waste 24.5 million litres per day!  One of the larger companies leak in excess of 600 million litres a day, so I don't think our usage will make a whole heap of difference.
