Soap test results. Whats ok?
« on: February 25, 2013, 06:21:04 PM »
I received my soap test kit today.  Thanks Nige.
I did a test on some bio that I made about a month ago and the result was 192 ppm.
I know that the lower the ppm the less soap, but I was wondering what is the highest ppm that is ok to use in the car without causing damage? Anyone know?

Depends on your car!  And the soap, if jiggled about enough in the tank, can form larger lumps which block filters.

When I was running soapy (250ppm+) I had hard white deposits form on the glow plugs in the pattern of the injector spray, can't see that being too good for the engine either.

Reading The Test: - If your fuel tests within the ASTM limits, well done. Your methods are first rate.
100-200 PPM, it shouldn't pose any real problems associated with fuel filter clogging.
200-300 PPM, you should be looking at ways of improving your process.
300-400 PPM, the likelihood of filter clogging may increase and soap content is getting high.
400+ PPM, do not use this fuel in a modern CRD (Common Rail Diesel) engine. Your soap and Methanol removal methods should be looked at again.
500+ PPM, there's a good chance you'll see cloudy water in a 50/50 shake test.

Soft top....sorry mate. I've not sent the instructions over. The details that Keith has put up is on the sheets. You should have the attachments in your email in a couple of minutes.

The bit that Keith has missed off are the acceptable limits....here they are:

Acceptable ASTM Limits For Soap
- NaOH Reacted Biodiesel - No more than 41 PPM (0.041%)
- KOH Reacted Biodiesel - No more than 66 PPM (0.066%)

I wonder if you'll get similar results to those I got at the weekend.

Oooops I got it wrong.
When I did I the test I had no instructions and I thought the small divisions on the small needle were .1ml not .01
I have just done a new test and this time I put in a bit more acid to be absolutely sure of the colour change.
I put in a total of .08ml.     So .08 x 320 = 25.6 ppm  I think I have done it right this time but did not expect the result to be that low.
