Use of ATF
« on: January 08, 2013, 02:34:25 PM »
Posted this on VOD as well
What are the benefits of adding mineral ATF to the fuel when topping up, similar use to Redex, instead of now and again when changing the filter

Can't answer that, but there were quite a lot of positive comments about adding 2 stroke oil a few years back.

Someone on VOD had bad running after running a filter filled with ATF.  Can't say I'm convinced on AFT in the filter, it has some funny properties that allow friction bands in auto boxes to grip while submerged in the stuff so not sure how a fuel pump will fair running it (lots of metal on metal moving parts!).

I imagine a bit in the tank will be much lower risk, but then again maybe just use some light hydrocarbon fractions like in injector cleaners, bit of white spirits?  Don't forget though that neither ATF or white spirits is duty paid - unlike proper injector cleaner which already has duty paid on it at the point of purchase.

Can't remember exactly, but I think it was smoother running, more MPG etc, etc.  I do remember it was all quite positive and presumably it legal and duty paid at least up to the max ratio stated on the container.

Was that two stroke with Diesel?  Or two stroke with bio/veg?

Presumably with diesel there is a lubrication benefit that isn't the case with bio/veg.

Do love the smell of Castrol R though :) (Castor Oil from Castor beans IIRC)

Think it was all with Dino, but the claimed advantages can't just be down to better lubrication, surly?

Sounds like there's room for an intrepid member or two to indulge in some experimentation!

Hi all
seen a volvo coach starting up after a turbo change, i'd just walked into the garage to start my shift, the guy doing the work changed the turbo but didn't clean out the intercooler which was full of oil from previous turbo failure, end result was 10litre diesel engine revving its guts out, sounded like F1 car.
until it threw a rod

Off you go then.
It'll be a novel thing for a disco to burn mineral oil instead of dumping it on the drive.
