Probably one for Tony!
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:45:44 AM »
I've been looking for a way to automate the navigation on the main page and came up with this ... http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CategoryTree

It might do what we are looking for and save manually creating a menu.

I've tried simply stuffing the code on a page but it doesn't work.  It looks like it may need something installed somewhere and it's all getting a little confusing for a "bear of little brain".

Any one got any thoughts?

Installed:

There are a bunch of options associated with - I've left these all as default, so let me know if any of them need altering.

So, hopefully it'll now be working?

Had a quick play:

http://biopowered.co.uk/w/index.php?title=Special%3ACategoryTree&target=Biodiesel&mode=categories&dotree=Show+tree

I guess we'd need subcategories again for it to show a tree, as such - we used to have "Biodiesel processors" as a subcategory of "Biodiesel" but elected to flatten the tree to aid simple navigation.

IIRC subcategory creation was as simple as making a new category (say, "Biodiesel processors" and on the cetegory listing page, editting it and adding the category tag "Biodiesel" to make "Biodiesel processors" a subcategory of "Biodiesel").

This seems to work ... see main page.  Not by virtue of any knowledge on my part, just trial and error! (left the old layout visible)

Not as elegant, but comprehensive, automated and a damn site less work!

Anyone any thoughts?

I don't like the look of it, but it saves a lot of work.

I was trying to get the text of the category pages to come up on the main page, but I cant find out how to do that.
