Extreme borehole - Antartic
« on: December 17, 2012, 01:08:18 PM »
You've probably seen it on the news, but often they miss the juicy technical detail fortunately there are a lot of videos here:

Here's an interesting one about the drilling/pump process and why they are drilling a cavity.

You'll note that their figure of 310 bar lake pressure can be put into our calculator here:

http://www.biopowered.co.uk/forum/tools/pump_pressure_head.php

SG = 1, Head = 310 bar then you get the 3km distance.  Nice to see our calculator works properly :)

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
Year 2212.

The recent extinction of animals from the southern hemisphere is being blamed on a mutated virus that was introduced to fossil water 200 years ago.
In an accident that claimed 16 lives, when a miscalculation caused a deep lake in the Antarctic to explode, killing the entire scientific team, a virus was introduced into the previously untouched waters, deep below the ice pack.
Believed to have come from the innards of one of the scientists, the virus had been slowly mutating, and has now infected over half the water on the planet. At the moment, scientists say it cannot pass the equator, due to the higher water temperatures there.
With Europe now over populated with refugees from the southern hemisphere, scientists say the only thing that can stop the spread of the virus, is exploding a series of nuclear bombs, deep in the ocean. Despite the risks associated with this, they say it will only be  a matter of time before it mutates again, and crosses the equator.
The EU government has pleaded for calm, stating that the food supply is secure, and everything is being done to contain the virus. They are requesting that the people refrain from eating each other.

Hmm, and the Mayan calender ends on the 21st, which coincidentally is when drilling is expected to resume?

All a bit too Quatermas and the Pit for me!  I'll stock up on hand sanitising jell ready for the bacterial apocalypse.
