My preference is here rather than the VOD,
the constant chatter and going off topic is something the wiki doesn't suffer from.

Completely focused on the job in hand, well it was until tonight it seems.

The VOD seems to attract newcomers who are out just to save money and are not interested in moving the discipline forward by contributing input to the forum ... here is developing to be more open to new ideas.

Sadly I suspect that'll become more prevalent as fuel prices rise.

A few years ago it was more of a hobby/technical challenge that many of us dabbled in because the appeal was the challenge.  Nowadays it's all about the money, which I do appreciate because I've seen the transition between hobby and financial necessity (which does tend to suck the joy out of it).

It's easy to see that anyone jumping on the hard work of others just to save some money without appreciating the effort that has gone on behind it won't be greeted favourably, but in many ways we've got to appreciate that the new crowd really aren't that different, just more desperate due to financial reasons.  And that they are considering making their own fuel doesn't really make them that far divorced from the old timers - it's just a state of mind.

The main difference being the recent steps forward.

I've seen it with another forum, that was small when i joined up, and then the owner pushed it hard and made it the biggest forum of its kind, and gets big advertising revenue.
It was small and friendly and helpful to start with, then more members came, and the mods were struggling to keep up, then the mods had a massive row and half them quit. I think he must pay professional mods now, because its so well moderated, its become boring, every deviation from the toppic is clamped down on.
It still gets massive views and posts, but it just is not interesting to read any more.
I got into a massive slanging match with another member, while all the mods were asleep, so it was all there for everyone to see for a while. he got banned, and I got a ticking off, so never posted there again. Fond memories, wish I'd saved the posts for posterity.

I can understand the influx of new members, what bugs me is they dont seem to listen or do any research.
I have given up with the Ali***** guy, im sure its a wind up. its also boring watching the same questions been asked such as the annual winteriser threads althougth the search engine can take the blame for that

Everything is cool over here. I've told the guy who pisses me off about his posts. He still posts but I do my best to deal with it. Normally by logging out.

KH - I think your comment about new members is right - it is seen in the VOD post about 2500 limit - they dont know and dont research

Never you Steve. He knows who he is.

To let you all stop wondering, its me Nigel has an issue with.  It seems he has never quite gotten over me querying his markup on the winteron.  He had no issue before then, but, hey, dogs and bones 'n all that.

To give you an idea, i get messages in my inbox like this -

The thing is julian...you're 5 posts in and added nothing to the forum....a bit like your posts on the VOD, plenty of content but no real substance. You have not offended me but you really need to add something of value to both forums. Really...you do!

Nige

And, then, when i ignore him -

Did you get my message Julian? Or do I need to send it again.

A bit sad really, but, hey, most of us have better things to do with our time than private messaging people on internet forums to...

Well, im not sure exactly!
