Thoughts please, (not my post)
« on: February 10, 2023, 01:27:41 PM »
Hello bio and veger weirdos 🙂  I would like to share a brain wave I've had! Us bio and vegers like to save and understand that every tiny bit adds up! I've put a plug timer on the fridge freezer and it's working a treat! Most of us use plug timers in our processes. I've put the timer to come on and off every 2 and a bit hours, and off for most of the night. You may have to check and adjust to suit you and how you use it with your family. Either way it can go off for a few hours every night. Do it and check your smart meter. Just think there are 8760 hours in a year, your fridge freezer is on for all of those hours. I've near enough halved mine to 4380 hours per year. I regulate it by frozen ice cubes and the ice cream lol. It really works!

yeah great idea, if there is a power cut they won't pay out for less than 24 hours off, and saying stuff in a freezer is ok for up to that long, so couple of hours off and a couple on should be fine, maybe even 4 on and 4 off, or 6 on and 6 off hours.

I inadvertently had to resort to this system about 15 years ago when the thermostat in my Siemens fridge/freezer packed up.

As a replacement was going to cost c.£50 or £60, I decided that I would use an ordinary timeswitch and set it for a few minutes every hour.  After a few days I was able to adjust the length of time to suit the conditions and it has proved satisfactory.

I have it settled now that it comes on for 10 minutes every hour.  That period would, of course, vary on the size of the fridge/freezer.

I used a thermometer for the first few days just to make sure that the two parts of the unit were reaching the appropriate temperatures.

I'm surprised freezers don't have a thermostat that automatically does this.
