Hi all.  :)

Thought I’d just pop in and say hello as I’m now approved. Been lurking and learning for a little while.
Have a Merc C270 running the old OM612 engine that should be happy on bio.

Can’t wait to get started! If anyone localish to the Sussex area has any kit they want to dispose of I’m starting from fresh so everything is welcome/ needed.  8)

Welcome Steve. you are certainly in a minority, not many people starting to make bio nowadays. Good for you.

And welcome from me too :)
Have you secured an collection yet? That's the hardest bit, making bio is easy, well, easy when you've learnt how to do it anyway.
Usually plenty of processors on eBay going cheap, lots are junk though so post links before you buy. You can of course make your own and it was worthwhile when processers were expensive but, IMHO, they are so cheap now second hand I wouldn't bother.
Running [if I get enough veg] Defender 200TDI and Winnebago Lesharo (now gone)Range Rover P38 ,and a space heater on home made bio.

I know of a bloke in Tonbridge who has a plastic processor he wants rid of. Plastic isn't the material most of us would prefer but lots of people have used then successfully for many years. It'll be cheap. PM me if you want contact info.

Welcome, Steve.

There should be a few processor setups up for grabs as many seem to be stopping production.

Have a read of the wiki.  There's a lot of good info contained therein.  99% of it is still current with only ambient temperature processing and spasmodic mixing being dreamt up in the last couple of years.

Welcome to the group. Take it slowly and as bandit says get your collection sorted before spending on setup etc. I would also suggest going to have a look at how someone is doing it and have a “lesson” before buying kit.

Hi Steve same engine as in my ML270, which I had to dig apart to do the flippin' swirl flaps (story with pics of my mod here https://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php?threads/ml270-swirl-flap-question.174580/ )

I'm finding that the Bosch CP1 injection pump has six o-rings that aren't bio-proof - three of those are the big ones that each of the three heads clamps down on to, to seal with the pump body.  Consequently (every 6 months) it starts leaking bio onto the multi-v belt which then flings the bio around the engine bay, primarily onto (in my car) the PS pump fluid feed and various suspension rubbers - which then also fail.

I contacted diesel bob about finding pump seals that are actually Viton but with no response.  I've rebuilt the pump several times with the FLAG kit from Germany and others with no long-term success. I have three CP1 pumps in rotation - they are very easy to swap out; remove the vacuum pump (two bolts) then three bolts for the IP, a fuel pipe clamp and a high pressure union and it's out.

The other thing to note is that the fuel hoses themselves (the black ones) have a viton inner, mesh strengthener, and then an outer that is not bio proof.  So wipe down and wash off any bio spills in the engine bay (particularly if changing a fuel filter) or these pipes will turn to cheese, allowing you to flake off the outer down to the protective mesh around the viton inner...

That aside it's actually a great engine for bio; the fuel return is cooled to the tank and there is a cunning EGR-flow fuel warmer before the filter which eliminates waxing in cold weather - really makes it a year-round bio car if you can get over the leaky injection pump.  One day I'll just measure the o-rings and replace them with ordinary viton ones...

Tony,

Have to tried Hills Rubber Co Ltd ( 0118 958 0535 ) in Reading for viton O rings? A small shop that's been around for decades. I've found them helpful in the past.

Thanks Tony. As luck would have it I got the car with the FEAD belt spray option already fitted, so now have 2 pumps lol….. the original one I rebuilt, but which was quite worn, and a new on that’s on it now that I got for £100 on fleabay! Couldn’t resist the bargain lol.

Thanks for all the info. I’ll get looking for Viton O rings as I have a few sources of viton stuff. I’ve been rebuilding Vauxhall 2.2 Direct injection pumps for about 6 years and the 10% ethanol issue has led me to explore viton coatings etc. I’m sure there’s a way 👍🏼
