Garage floor paint?
« on: May 12, 2016, 06:56:31 PM »
I've heard good things about garage floor paint being resistant to oils and bio spills - anyone got any experience?

I'm keen that when we move I put down something resistant before setting up the plant again :)

Why not use polyester resin or whatever its called, that's resistant to just about everything,  sling in a layer of chopped strand glass and you'll have a bomb proof floor.

It's cheaper than people realise.

I painted both the garage floor and the bio shed in Screwfix floor paint.

The garage has a very smooth finish in high strength concrete and has survived well ... circa 8 years. The only areas that have suffered are around the lathe, mill and drill where swarf gets trodden into the finish.

The bio shed lasted only a couple of years despite trying to mop up each spill and drip immediately.  I replaced it with some very tasteful blue tile pattern lino which has survived quite well, but is now starting to pucker up around the most heavily trafficked area.

Jim ... if you have a source of cheap polyester floor resin, I'd love to hear of it.  I spent a considerable time looking for cost effective coatings and all were way more expensive than floor paint.

I bought 5ltr a few months ago for various experimental aircraft parts, cost around the £20 mark with the hardener thrown in for free.

If you want a non slip surface stir some dry sand into the mix.

I can find 5l for £30 but not as low as £20.  I suppose given what it is there to do, £30 isn't outrageous.  Is 5l enough for a garage?

I'm sure I saw some garage floor paint for £7.99 for 2.5l in Aldi, though whether it's polyester I couldn't say.

Forgot to say, paint on the garage floor has been fine with the occasional WVO, bio, glycerin and mineral oil spills provided it's  wiped up straight away.

So the bits that didn't get wiped up straight away have bubbled or peeled?

The bio ones would have done, but I have made a point of trying to look after it ... well, the bits I can get to.
It's so full of crap now I can't see much of the floor!

I don't think WVO or mineral oil would have too bad an effect.  From experience in the shed, it's bio that does the damage.
