got a mate with a fourtrak and an odd problem.


starts ok untill it gets warm, then wont start at all.

but

if he drenches the fuel pump in cold water it runs fine till it gets hot again.

any ideas?

does it on dino or bio

Stop solenoid failing?
Gets warm, resistance increases, it looses magnetism, and lets the plunger go.
Cooling it down gives it a new lease of life, till it gets hot again.
Just a hypothesis.
Try and get a finger on it when the vehicle gets hot, see what it's like.
I think that is where I would start, anyway.

How the heck did he figure out tipping cold water on the pump, anyway......?

Does it have a cold start advance mechanism on the side of the pump?  (Sometimes wax-stat arrangement, not sure on this vehicle - a photo would be handy).

thats the second finger pointing at the solenoid. im sure he`s replaced it but will check. cheers.

If it was a cold start fault it should still run, but knock like buggery.

Not if it's massively retarded (since they normally retard timing when hot).  I remember messing with one on the Delica and got it to a state where it was almost impossible to start after a run without lots of throttle and even then easy to stall and down on power.
