NaOh glyc not setting!
« on: August 19, 2015, 06:54:16 PM »
I process with NaOh as it is easy to dispose of the solid glyc. I have never, over many years, not had it set solid in a cubie in a few days, maximum, after processing. The last two batches, however have not set. I have not changed the oil, chemicals or process.  Though I do now use much less meth than previously, about 12 to 13%.  Bio is fine with small fallout (cars will run on straight veg so no need to get clear 27/3)
Any ideas why it should not be setting?

Temperature?

ASM glyc is temperature sensitive,  liquid above and solid below a point.

I think all glycerol is temperature sensitive. It is strange though that it doesn't go solid now you are using less methanol.
When you say solid is easier to dispose of? I don't quite follow.

If it's solid you can put it in the land fill bin at the recycling centre.

I see. I like my glycerol nice and runny, valueable stuff for conditioning oil.

James, I don't use asm just pearl NaOh. I do have some asm but keep that for second stage if needed, the last two batches have been OK after stage one.

Dgs, I use the glyc for conditioning the oil. I have a heating coil driven from the boiler or lister that gets it nice and hot. Interestingly the last lot did not set after being  used for conditioning (now mixed with sawdust for disposal in landfill)

I understand thet temperature affects setting but it has not been that hot recently and it has set in hotter weather previously.
I have been getting much better oil recently as my collections are complaining that it needs changing more often, I wonder if that is having an effect? I wonder if the oil suppliers are using a different oil?
