twin tanking the Rexton
« on: August 13, 2015, 04:59:54 PM »
nows the time to twin tank the Rexton.

now i have a 22L tank (orange, fuel for the use of)

but i need to keep the boot fairly clean as mums wheelchair goes in and empty as i collect 300L per week and need the boot space.

so, i had a think

the rexton is a 5 or 7 seater in the same body and trim.

the rear passenger seats have armrests built into the boot space. like so.

on the nearside, is this lot

which got me thinking.

so i took the off side off for a nosey.

but how do you measure it for a tank?

shove a bin bag in and fill it with expanding foam, wait till it sets and repeat...

and it didnt work.

dont know if it was the vibration, the lack of air in the bag or a duff tin i ended up with a solid block about 4" deep.

more tins to follow....

Good thinking. I guess you can displace water with the foam to work out the volume too?

Fill a bucket to the brim with water, stand in a bigger drum.  Submerge the foam/bin-bag combo completely in the water and the displaced volume spills out from the bucket - measure that and you've got the volume of your strange foam shape.

Or - displace the water, and measure how much it takes to fill the bucket back up to the brim again.

I tried a similar idea to insulate the top of my processor.

I recon the squirty foam from DIY stores is probably different to the two part stuff you see being used to make race car seats.

Try roughly lining the volume with polythene using big overlaps, so the foam doesn't have so much work to do, pushing the bag around when it expands.

Or - displace the water, and measure how much it takes to fill the bucket back up to the brim again.

Or do it by weight - weigh the full drum of water. Submerge the foam form in completely in the drum to displace a load of water.
Take the foam out and weight the now lighter drum.
Volume of the mould in litres is equal to the weight of the full drum minus the weight of the now partially empty drum - in Kilograms.

you could use some cardboard, a pair of scissors and a roll of gaffa tape, and make a template.

so, after finding out i live near liverpools largest florists supplies, i bought some oasis bricks.

and set to work.

proper view of space.

each one of these is housebrick size.

so theres a fair bit of room.

so next how to keep them together.

tent pegs and cotton wool buds

should get a decent sized tank.

Resourceful. Might be hitting 25 litres there. Looks to me as though it would struggle to get in a 20L cubie.

I did actually think about that and just put in the hose to the bottom with a weight on it but we are fitting a proper filler neck and everything so may as well have a nice stainless steel one.

Or so Simon says.....
