I think some of it is a deep feeling of inadequacy, and a jealous regret. I know peeps who drive round in veg oilers. They could be buying new veg, and chucking it in the tank. They still run on dino.
I know loads of folks with the intelligence, space, kit, and capability to make a processor. They still run dino.
Is it some kind of inability to let go? It's like the shame or guilt for the money they have lost  from not doing it earlier would be to painful to bare. Of course, once they have repeatedly ridiculed someone who is doing it, it makes it even more difficult for them to do it themselves.

It's because it's much easier to pay out your money at the pump and try not to think about it, it's OK, everyone else does it.

I suspect most veggers/biodiesellers have bit of a mentality where they quite enjoy being a bit outside what is considered normal anyway, and saving a few quid in the process is just a double bonus.

I remember the first. 12 litres of asda's finest on top of 1/4 tank, in a relatively new and still being paid for Nissan Serena. When it didn't break I didn't look back, apart from to see what the smell was.

Strangely the number of non believers I know hasn't really changed despite all those years at it now ???

There was an article in New Scientist about this - it's an effect on humans where a short term goal is always considered more important than the long term.

Problem: Need to travel.
Short term: Buy diesel.
Long term: Research bio, get WVO, make bio, test it, put it in the car. Profit.

In the article it was in the context of why we're totally failing to manage climate change - it's much easier to maintain the status quo and continue to burn dinosaurs than it is to stump up the enormous investment required for renewables. Besides, every other country is doing it right?

There's many things you could attach it to. Going to the gym and credit cards are the first that occur to me.

What is normal ?

I never really fitted in anywhere, school, work, social groups, I always felt uneasy, the oddball if you like.
But among other veg/bio foke I feel at home, the whole making something out of what others discard, fix not replace, improve not make do with sort if stuff is what I've always done.

When ever I meat someone I've not see for a while the first thing they ask is "are you still running you car on chip fat", my grin tells all.

I think a degree of eccentricity seems to be within us all. We seem to love turning valves and pouring things from one container into another. Some of us even build strawbale houses!
