Replacement Thumb
« on: June 11, 2015, 06:47:53 PM »
As may of you may know form the VOD site, I had a accident in January with a table saw and my left hand . :-\

Ive ended up losing 1/2 my left thumb and was wondering if any of you 3D printer chaps would like a challenge, Hmm ie do you think a replacement could be made to fit over the remaining stump and just extend the length to near normal ?

Ive tried to post a picture but dont seen to be having much luck.

Yes, it could be done, but I think it would need to be an exact fit to the stump ... virtually impossible to draw.

It really needs to be scanned.  I don't have such stuff, but I've heard that the latest X Box is capable of scanning things ... anyone got one to have a go?

Or there is software that will accept a load of photos and generate a 3D model, but I think it's lots of money.

Another alternative is to print a cup, fill it with a suitable silicone and push the stump in until it sets.

Now be honest, and tell us you don't want the prosthetic for some sick joke down the pub one day.

Sounds like it could be a first for a bio forum.

Rather than trying to actually print the complicated bit, would it be possible to do as Julian says, and make it out of some sort of soft silicone compound, then leave a flat end, to which the printed thumb could be bonded?

I'm sure there must be some kind of industry standard material for artificial limbs and bits.
Maybe ask your quack if they can put you in touch with the right person. They might be quite enthusiastic about it.

The OT Dept at hospital , say that because I can make a "pinch" a thumb tip is not a priority, Ive thought about getting a latex glove and filling it with silicone BUT the cure time is too long to wear while waiting for it to set..

If you did this right Stumpy you could have a range of useful attachments made
like nose picking and ear poking etc.....

I think it's a great idea!

Have a look at mold making silicone or some of the potting silicones, they have quite rapid set times these days.

Would the OT department offer advise on suitable materials?
