theres 50 meters for 39.99 thus far... may give it a punt then if that's worth it?

On SWA cable the outer sheath is usually used as the earth.  You can buy special glands that grip the strands of the sheath and normally include a tag from which you can take the earth.

Have you priced up new stuff? I don't remember exactly now, but the last few times I've heard what was paid for new stuff, I was very surprised at how cheap it was.
A relative bought some last year, and got a real good deal by working builders merchants off against each other.

Good explnation of terminatig SWA here ...

http://wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php?title=Terminating_SWA

Obviously you shouldn't use 3ph cable for single phase, but IF you were to, I'd say you were best off  using the sheath as earth, the brown as live, put blue sleeving over one of the other cores for neutral and don't use the third core.

When I put in SWA I used the shield as earth, but I gather it's good to use three core and use shield and the black for earth, the argument being that then the earth is protected within the shield that way.

I'm sure hifly would have a comment on this!

Depends on the cross sectional area, what is it?  It doesn't look that chunky from the photos.  Are you using it for garden lighting or running immersions?
