if there is a tappety ticking sound when warm, walk away. it has hydraulic tappets and it's a sign that the head gasket is on its way out

What's the white writing on the front of the cam drive cover ... I think I can make out 8.25 ... probably the price of the replacement engine at a breakers yard.

Having owned a Hyundai (Lantra, buggest pile of flimsy crap I've ever driven) I must admit I've really been put off South Korean cars, but perhaps it's different with other makers?

I like unusual vehicles that most people haven't seen before and are beyond many to maintain (it's part of the challenge), and do keep eyeing the likes of the Musso.  But it's hard to jump from well built and well engineered Japanese cars into the unknown :)

you say that like its a bad thing? 8)

its the grade and volume of oil.

it belongs to a ex diesel submarine engine tech. the things mint. i do things when they break, he does them when he`s bored.

im prepared to wait till sept to get it as its the best maintained one i`ve seen.

next, what to do with the musso.

too good to scrap, but needs a few jobs doing.

fits 6x60`s in the boot without putting the seats down too.....

its the toughest vehicle ive ever owned.

this ones a 51 plate and no rust.

needs 2x cv boots and the 4wd doesnt.

otherwise it runs like a train on roughly filtered oil.

probably put it on the bay for about 500 squid

you put it in 4wd and everything rumbles. could be cv`s or something else.

personally, doesnt bother me, i use 2wd all the time and its fine.

its got a ding on the ROS quarter and other scratches.

thats when i got it. bumpers are black now.

its lifted by about 1 1/2 inches and runs 31" tyres.

range rover classic rear springs for carrying capacity. doesnt bottom out with 6 full 60`s in the back

new pads all round, new clutch in november

ignore horror stories about handbrake. it doesnt need new cables, shoes or anything.

its a common fault.

remove three wheelnuts on rear that hold hub cover on.

leave wheel in place.

jack up off floor.

let handbrake off (ie, dont put it on.)

there is a little rubber bung on the end of the axle/hub on the rear.

remove bung.

put hole to bottom of hub.

look in with torch.

find little toothed wheel.

insert flathead in screwdriver into teeth.

on drivers side move wheel upwards a few turns.

spin wheel.

carry on until wheel doesnt spin.

back off slightly.

replace everything and do the same on the other side but on passenger side, move toothed wheel DOWNWARDS.

hey presto, handbrake....

put handbrake cable and shoe money behind bar in local pub.

get pissed smiling at your good fortune.......

....edited to remove specific details of the garage and vehicle as it was probably inappropriate on Tony's forum :)

I went to have a look a Rexton in Leister today as it's the closest one too me (no real intent to buy)......

The car was not at the garage but at a compound at a different site.

We got there and it wouldn't start. Young chap fetches a starter pack... still wouldn't start. One phone call later and another chap arrives with another booster pack..... still wouldn't start. Second chap goes off and comes back with a set of heavy duty jump leads and we finally get the car started. Battery looks new. The car was MOT'd on 1st April so it's not like the car has been stood for months. While all this was going on, I had a good chance to look around the car. The first thing that struck me was how rusty the car was underneath - if it was galvanised, any zinc coating had long since gone. Makes my 20 year old Challenger look pristine.

On the road, the car was very sluggish through the gears - course that may be due to it being stood for a while but as it was, my japmobile would leave it standing.

Wife liked it - it is reasonably tidy inside - comfortable ride - no aircon on this model though.

So, after much dithering, I have come to a decision..... I will get the Challenger MOT'd and (unless there is something really major) get it fixed up - thus allowing me to find something new at leisure. I certainly haven't given up on the idea of a Rexton but I need to bide my time until the right car for me comes up.

Many thank to all who have proffered advice, both here and on VOD - it's been really helpful.

Cheers

Nick
