Anyway as discussed, the old VW,s are air cooled and have notoriously poor heating, i was thinking of a supplementary heater along the lines of a veggy system

One of these sandwich plates on the oil filter

Going to one side of a heat exchanger

Then one of these self contained heater/fan units on the other side

With a 12v pump in line

The fan is two speed and turning the pump off would hopefully stop the heater working in summer, the sandwich plate has a place where a temp switch could be used and maybe linked to the pump so that it reaches its operating temp before it can be switched on
Thoughts? would this work? Expansion tank needed etc?

Would you not risk over cooling the oil? There is already an oil cooler iirc you might need to arrange this to be blanked off somehow?

hi all

ok this is my input (going on the same looking thing as on my car, and how mine operates, I used this to make a heated filter back in the day, kieth did the thread 14/16mm I think?) the picture below looking at it, the 2 threaded ports if left open on a car *NO OIL WOULD COME OUT* so this is a heat exchanger in itself, so no need to add a second heat X taken from a boiler, then you would plumb that to the main fan/blower.

couple things to work out:

thread size on original VW lump where the filter goes, and does the oil ring and adapter have the same thread (had this problem on the heated filter we made)

also, I think a header tank would be a very good idea for filling/expansion-pressure release/antifreeze filling/get air out, higher than main system/easy fill location

two stage switch??? think I would look into variable/rheostat, better control of environment and ambient temp.

I have a similar system under my campervan seat, I don't think it has a switch inline to kill flow its constant, but aslong as fan isn't on cab doesn't get hot. (mine is basically on or off, space heater) it has more attached but think they never connected all the gubbins etc... but still works well in conjunction with main van blkower.

the pump seems abit overkill, maybe a smaller water bottle type etc? all I think is needed is a steady flow, which brings me onto volume of liquid try keep down to the minimum (less to heat/faster heat up times)

another Q is what temp does a VW engine get to???

as to dickjotec and would the water cool the oil too much I doubt this, the engine is the constant it would be just like adding another ltr of oil or 2, but I do take on board the fan speed will try to cool the water as it blow heat off the radiator part inside the blower, but I think the engine will win hands down!
