The upside of owning a Land Rover Discovery!
« on: December 13, 2014, 01:00:48 PM »
Just had the MOT on the Disco.

As it's passed first time the last three years, I didn't hold out much hope of it passing this time, not least of all for the hole on the rear wheel arch next to the seat belt mount, which has been there for two years.

The normally grumpy examiner seemed in fine fettle and said it was doing quite well for it's age and failed it on ...

Front tyre below the legal limit in just one spot.

Track rod end boot split (but ball joint OK).

Hole by rear seat belt mount.

And steering box leaking fluid.

----------------------------------

Had a spare tyre in the shed, changed by hand .. cost £0.00 and a severely damaged wrist.

Welded a small plate from the scrap box over the hole ... cost £0.00

Pressure washed the steering box  ... cost £0.00

Splashed out on a rubber boot .. cost £1.00

Making a grand total of a quid to get a pass.

Not only that but the "death wobble", which it's had since I got it, has gone completely with the change of tyre.

Don't you just love Discos?

Now that's what I'd have thought, he being the undisputed World Champion an' all.

Like a lot of people, I suspect, I have changed a steering box on a Disco. Unlike most, I made every mistake possible, and turned a relatively simple job into a right clown of a job.
If your going to change it, which you may well have to do at some point, don't tighten anything up until everything is on. I seem to remember the one pipe is a proper swine to get threaded in, and very easy to cross thread. (Although I did manage not to cross thread it).

Oh yes.

I fitted one to a series 3. Works great, but it was a pig to fit.
