Thermocouple positions and float switch elbow direction.
« on: July 27, 2014, 04:43:46 PM »
Hi guys  :) some of you may remember me from the VOD forum. Well i lost my log-in details for VOD a while ago and have tried and tried to log back in but can never get past the verification stage so I've given up!!

This is my first post on here so be nice  ;) I've had a search about for TC positions and some people are using the thermostat housing on the immersion and some people are mounting it midway point in the reactor. What is the best position to go for? Are multiple PID's the way forward to stop the reprogramming per reaction stage?

Last year I was kindly given a tank float switch by one of the VOD members, I'm very sorry but I've forgotten your name(if your on here). Now this may sound like a daft question but which way should the elbow be facing for it to work? Should it bend up or down? It's the same type as in the pictures on the wiki.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Al.

Welcome to biopowered wiki and forum.  We have a dedicated team on standby 24/7 specifically to sort out log in problems, so hopefully you'll be OK on here (Yeah, right!)

We're always nice to people on here except for KH ... please feel free to insult and slag him off, it's a "forumsport" for many of us.

People have differing views on the thermocouple position, as you've noticed.  However, if you run the pump whilst heating (many have a control system arranged so that you can't run the heater unless the pump is running ... not quite sure why), then it make little difference as the temperature will be the same over the height of the processor and around the pipe circuit.

If you don't run the pump, the heated oil will rise in the processor tank making the top the hottest point, so with the thermocouple at the bottom you won't be monitoring the highest temperature.

My processor has the thermocouple fitted in the immersion heater pocket and it's worked fine for six years.  So long as you are aware of how it behaves and understand how to work it you'll be fine.

The other point to bear in mind is that if you mount it higher up, you may be limiting yourself to only running full batches.

For the float switch, you really need to put a meter on the contacts to find out how it behaves in each orientation.  The safest way to arrange it is to have the contacts open on falling level ... that way it will be fail safe.  You will have to arrange your control circuit to suit.

I use the thermostat sleeve in the immersion and this has worked without issue (even without the pump running to circulate the mix).

Oh and welcome :)

Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for your help.

Just ordered a SSR and heat sink for the float switch so think I've got everything and good to go. I'll be doing a bit this weekend hopefully so I'll let you know how I get on.

So with a water jacket, pocket in the oil or water?
The water obviously gets a lot hotter than the oil, at the moment i have trouble with the water boiling long before the oil reaches temp, if i put it in the oil this will continue, if i put it in the water it will keep cutting in and out and take longer the reach temp
(i have just read this post, Julian beware!)
