Newbe How do I start making bio-diesel
« on: April 03, 2014, 04:01:30 PM »
Hello to the forum

I have loads of veg oil sitting around waiting for me to get started on making bio-diesel, but where do I start. I have decanted a lot into a 205 litre drum to settle, I then plan to filter it through a couple of sheets to remove the debris. I am then a bit stuck as to what to do after that !

Is there any one near to Great Missenden who could come and advice me ! I had a number for some one but in the time its taken I have lost the number !

fln742j@gmail.com

Thanks for reading

Many regards

Neil

Hi, and welcome to the forum and wiki.

The best place to start is the wiki ... http://www.biopowered.co.uk/wiki/Main_Page

Read it through, then read it through again.  Then come back and ask about anything you don't fully understand.

There's a lot to learn and it's really beyond the scope of a forum thread to teach you every aspect.  That's sort of why we put the wiki together!

Hello and welcome,  you either jump into bio brewing right up to your neck or run away now.

Bio is not just cheap fuel, it's addictive and becomes a way of life, you'll permanently stick of veg oil and everthing you touch will be sticky.

Apart from that it's ok.

Ain't that the truth Jim.

Do you want to make bio or blend with diesel/petrol?  What vehicle is it for?

A corner of my shed became the whole shed, became the shed and tool store, became the summer house and eventually roughly 1/3 of the garden (not counting the empties)
BUT I can commute without counting the fuel pennies and spend the savings on more fun stuff, well fun for the kids anyway.

I can only echo what everyone else has said about it being smelly, sticky, addictive and dominating. I would also say that to the unwary it can be a hazardous activity, so read and understand all the safety stuff.

There's a few does and don't's to obey,  the first being DON'T buy a plant/processor/reactor from anyone on ebay.

My latest protégé has just completed his first ever batch of bio successfully, so if you'd like to do the same listen to use.

I have to agree with Jim. In fact, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING until you fully understand what you need to do. Study the wiki, try to find somebody close to you who is already brewing, and they can normally be bribed with biscuits to allow you to spend a couple of hours with them. I always found practical tuition so much better than theory, and some of the stages are much less daunting when they are actually shown. Good luck, welcome to the forum, you will enjoy the learning (& banter).

I remember being daunted with the tritatation thingy. Then I found it's easier without it.  Just goes to show no ones right or wrong, it's what suits you and your way of doing it. But everyone agrees on one thing. Dry oil and you can't go far wrong.

Richard, I'm afraid I have to disagree with your estimate, with Chug as tutor he'll be well over 90% of the way IF he can keep up.
