Macbook Pro
« on: January 25, 2014, 06:27:15 PM »
Does anybody on here know anything about Macbooks. My lads pro wont start up. The loading bar at the bottom of the start up page takes an age to travel along. When it reaches the end the thing shuts it's self down.

We have just returned from the local apple store and have made an appointment with the Genius desk for Friday afternoon.

If anybody can help or has seen this in their apple products can you give me a shout.

Thanks.

Nige

How'd you get on at the Genius bar?

Might be able to help if they fail, but Apple is your best bet to begin with.

We didn't see anybody at the genius bar but made an appointment for next Friday for them to have a look at it and assess the situation.

Have you got much experience with macbook problems James?

OK..here's the latest. We went to the Genius Bar today, at the alloted time, and saw a very nice man who diagnosed the problem as the hard drive. He was quite disappointed that it should show such a fault considering its age...less than 18 months...and has arranged for the fault to be repaired FOC. The bill for the Hard Drive and the front hard drive bracket and the labour would have come to £158.40 inc

As you can imagine, my son is rather chuffed at that result as am I :D

That's a good result.

The potential repair cost is surprising - by comparison the whole HP Elitebook 6930p that I type this on cost me less than £100 and is very similarly specified (the HP has faster T9600 processor but slower graphics acceleration - same memory and display, wireless N etc).  I guess this is down to the brand desirability?

ain't that the truth.

I don't get it myself. It's something he wanted and he saved to get....but your statement is the bottom line Tony.

Oh if he saved for it because he really wanted it then fair enough.  Not for us to dictate :)

Oh yeah...I would never have bought it for him. He had the use of a perfectly good laptop and desk top computers.

I love him to bits but drew the line at spending nearly £1200 on a computer. We told him to save for it and buy it himself...which is what he did. He's since bought himself a 22" HD monitor and hooks his macbook to it and has the best of both worlds...a mac and a macbook. While connected, the macbook sits in a beatifully crafted "arc."

Apple make some stunningly ergonomical and aesthetically pleasing accessories....but at a price. :o

Yes, they do. When I bought my MacBook, it was the best machine on the market by far.

It might have been expensive, but given the hours I spend using it, it is justified. It's also worth pointing out that you also paid for the service you just received. I doubt there's many manufacturers that'd replace a hard drive FOC 18 months after purchase.

Glad you got it sorted.
