I think that all hope for the future was lost a few years back with the advent of "reality TV."

We live in an age where ridicule and humiliation masquerades as entertainment. The advent of anti-social networking sites adds fuel to an already out of control fire.....fast becoming an inferno.

Looks a good idea to help with potty training, my 2 year old grandson has his own tablet which he watches his favourite programs on, especially when he is travelling to and from nursery which is a 45 minute journey.

There's always someone looking to make a quick buck out of the foolish when these ideas come to the fore. You don't need tech to help with basic training of children. Encouragement and perserverance is key to the child development. These ideas are often seen a quick fix for lazy and gullable parents who often have more money than sence.

I happen to know someone who, from an early age, spent far too many hours in his bedroom with his computers, BBCs etc.

By the time he reached his mid teens he had virtually No social skills, he couldn't converse with anyone, stuck out like a saw thumb in a group and ended up needing serious help for a few years.

I have to agree with Nige, there are far too many lazy,  selfish and useless young parents.

I do a school run twice a day with my grandchildren and watch the young parents and how they interact with their children.

Before the kids go in or come out the vast majority are more interested in their mobile phones than their kids, apart from the initial hello as they come out of school not a lot more happens.

Keep youngsters AWAY from these contraptions, remember they're a TOOL not a way of life.

remember they're a TOOL not a way of life.

Yes Jim used correctly they are a tool, my grandson is 2, he can easily complete jigsaw puzzles aimed at 3 times his age. He can recognise and place all the letters of the alphabet into their place on a board, count to mid teens and just loves all his books. With regard to his tablet he can work it better than I could. Not only does he use it for leisure it has many learning programs which he uses of his own free will. He has had access to phones tablets and laptops since before he was mobile, he treats them just how you or I would now because he has been taught how to, not just given them as a tool to shut him up until they get broken.
Both my Daughter and son in law have to work and travel 45 minutes each way, they have him in a nursery near where they work so they can spend the time in the car with him rather than drop him off where they live and have him in nursery for 11 hours a day. In the car he is a captive audience where lots of teaching and learning goes on.  Modern technology does not have to be used as a means for parents not to bring their kids up responsibly though sadly that is often the case.
My first comment re the potty training was tongue in cheek and I knew who would jump at it lol nod nod wink wink.

My comments were not aimed at you Steve but parenting in general. The written word is often misunderstood especially when it's disguised as tongue in cheek.  It's a discussion forum after all...whether you  join in the discussion or just post to provoke comment doesn't really matter.

Nice to know I'm still in your thoughts though.  ;)

Makes bedtime easy. I just send my kids a message Facebook to let them know it is time to sleep, then ping their machines to make sure they're off.

Secretly I sometimes wish it was that easy ;) I'm glad that they use technology at an appropriate level without obsessing like I do!

A little while ago there was an app for iPhones that reckon if it was downloaded it would make'm waterproof.

Thousands of Total Twats did then complained when it didn't work.

They might know how to work'm but an awful lot of'm must be as thick as shite.

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

Not in the dark, in fact he would be at a major disadvantage.

Well obviously he'd use the screen of his iPad as a torch, innit?
