Fascinating. I wonder what cost the drums are as they come off the line. There must be a few quids worth of steel in them, let alone the production cost. It's a bit odd, really, that used ones can be had for nothing.

Surprisingly little, the amount of steel they buy will drastically reduce the tonnage rate, tooling costs per unit is unbelievably low, pennies, manufacturing time will be measured in seconds.

If the total unit cost is in excess of £5 I'd be very surprised.

More expensive to recycle to use as a drum so only worth scrap value which aint a lot. Shame really.

I guess that's right. There'd be an awful lot comes out of a tonne of sheet, and they are probably making them in their hundreds of thousands, if not millions.
By the time they collect the used ones, and test them, it's not worth it.

the only waste in the production is the stamping out of lid and base, the rolls for the cylinders is exact size.
