I've got one of Nathan's tubes, and very nice it is too.  I live in fear of breaking it, however.

Same here, such a useful bit of kit, but so fragile.

I remember, years back, people used to have glass items for, umm, breathing through.

It was always obvious they wouldnt last!

Im right surprised my test tube has lasted this long, but, i guess there's not the same complications any more! ; )

I've got one of Nathan's tubes as well...don't use it though 'cause I've got one of Uberveg's. I prefer the profile of the Uber-tube.

Nathan's is there as a back up in case I become a bit clumsy.

I like Uber-tube too!

For those with the conical type, if you are as dumb as me, reading the graduations can be a little tricky towards the bottom of the tube.

I did this graphic which I find very useful.  Print off and stick on the shed wall ...

With the recent talk of iphone apps, this could be used old-tech style -

If you have a constant batch size, you could write on the sheet how many gramms of catalyst you needed to add - ie
  • g by the 1ml mark,
  • x2g by the 2ml mark, and so on.

I dont run consistant batch sizes (i like to make it difficult for myself) but others may find that usefull?

Just to confuse the issue I think I'd prefer the Nathan tube as with only a little dropout it appears it would be easier to see how much.

I've made request for two more Uber-Tube's on the VOD James. Let me know when there are sufficient orders and when you would like payment.

At the moment I'm tending to use the 3/27 just as confirmation of a full reaction, not to quantify the second stage catalyst, but it's really not difficult read at all.

I do find tiny globs of oil stick to the sides of the tube if the reaction isn't complete and that flicking the tube does little to free them.

I find spinning it way more effective than flicking it.
