VW T4 van problem
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:04:36 PM »
got a problem with a light on the dash not going out and sounds a buzzer when key goes on for few secs, its for brake pads but all pads are good / new, vw says it will have to get dash out and cut a wire, any other ways out? anyone had this before?

also hunting when (HOT!) not cold no problem when cold, and to clarify it only runs on diesel! 52 plate 2.5 turbo.

I've never come across this before, but VW saying cut a wire, sounds a little bit to me like VW saying we haven't got a clue, so we'll cut the wire to the buzzer..........

Is the buzzer to warn of worn brake pads. I'd say a good inspection of the connections to the pads would be the first line of enquiry. Maybe one is shorting out, or not connected even. I would guess they work on the pad touching earth connects the circuit up and starts the buzzer. Probably only one wire going to each pad. Quite possible it has chafed through and is shorting to earth somewhere. Its a very hostile environment down there.

this light is on 2 vw vans, both 02/52 plates.

on one van wires need to connect to each other to put out light, they dont earth out type? its like they make a contiuouis live, buzzer just warns of any light coming on....

and why one van hunts on hot running diesel i have no idea?

Right, so the two wire system, I have a feeling they work by bending down a piece of metal when the pad gets to thin, to make the circuit. This will be covered with a piece of plastic, it's like a prong of plastic that touches the disk. What can happen is it gets bent down for some other reason, like a piece of dirt going up through.
It might not actually be visible that it has bent down.
Maybe try disconnecting each pad in turn?

The other thing is, is the light just for brake pads, or could it be for brakes generally? Is the fluid level OK, or is the fluid level sensor giving a false reading? Just a couple of possible ideas.

No idea on the hunting.

The fluid may not be low, but the sensor could be giving a false reading. It could be a duff sensor, or or chafed wire somewhere, or non of the above...........

You would hope it would be spotted, but it never ceases to amaze me what is missed, by people who should know better. I'm no better myself, I miss the obvious and over complicate it, till someone comes along and points out what I should have seen in the first place.

Worst one I've seen lately was a Landrover Freelander with chronic running problems, getting worse all the time. Been on diagnostics, sensors changed, filters changed, carried on for months. Turned out to be a duff battery............

Wait a minute, this isn't the light that tells you the handbrake is on, is it...........?
