i have an orange one somwhere.  i think the deal was that its £5 a month, but, if you have an orange phone (payg or whatever) its £0 / month.

then you use it, and they just bill you per mb of transfer.  its been ages since ive used it, and i think the rate is probably set up for occasional use, rather than general, but, for me, its good, as, on the very rare occasion i need it, i have it (assuming i can find it) and i can just use it, and they bill me (no having to pre-load it with cash)

ps.

we got it when we were looking for somewhere to live - we could sit in the camper at the campsite, and look up where we were going etc. the next day.

im suspecting you may want it for similar?

I've got a 3 dongle that's PAYG. Think it's something like £5 per 1GB and you have to use it within a month of buying it.

I've also got my phone on giff gaff, and can tether from that.

You can get PAYG dongles. I used to have a three one and you could various amounts of credit on it with the price per GB getting lower the more you put on.

I now have a three contract dongle which gives me 15GB of data per month for £16 per month (2 year contract)

If it wasn't for the fact that I now have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (also on three) on a contract that has truely unlimited data and allows tethering (and being Android that is so simple, just enable the wireless access point on the phone and connect to it like any other hotspot) then I would keep the dongle.

The contract with three is £32 per month for the Galaxy S3, a total of 5000 minutes (2000 croos network and 3000 three to three) every momth, 5000 texts per month and unlimited data

Signal coverage is good and internet speeds are really good. My phone was on Vodafone until recently and, while their voice coverage was good, I could not get any 3G coverage anywhere near home.

I would recommend Three every time, just sitting at home now and the speed test app shows my current broadband speed on the phone (connected to the moibile network not my wifi) as 7.2Mbps down, 2.9Mbps up.

I've been on 3, orange and Voda dongles. There are websites that will give you coverage.
3 seems to have the best reputation.

Pay as you go, a £15 voucher will buy 3 gig, which will last a month. This is what I used to do. That would be mainly browsing, and the odd look at you tube.

Ther are variations on cost for 2 and 1 gig, depending on if you want cheaper or to last longer. Then you can pay £2.99 for 500meg, that will last till midnight the next day, but you credit stays on your account indefinitely. Very good if you only use it very infrequently.

I just see you can get 7 gig a month £25 now.

Cant you pick a mower and strimmer up cheap and cut a few lawns? Do a tidy job and you'll soon pick a few up. It would keep you in internet and a bit more.

I don't think a dongle is really cheaper, its just a lot more flexible, as in no fixed costs, if you go PAYG.

have you got a mobile ?  what kind, and who's your contract with ?

it's easy with an android, but you can probably do it with others

in non-geek - you press a button, and the phones wifi turns on, then you can connect to it via your computer and use the phone like it's a router :-)

need to check your phone contract to see how much free data you get / how much it will cost

but for forums/email/web pages a few gig is loads, you only use a lot on places like youtube or downloading films etc...

non of your neighbours have wifi they'd let you use ?

hi

yeah i got andriod phone and know where the tethering bit is, but i dont have a contract, just use it for emergencies so put some money on payg now and again... its a galaxy ace, first one...

i was having a row in a orange shop about tethering, why do i need a bolt on internet package to tether my laptop when a contract comes with a 1 gig of internet for the phone. that i could use for mt laptop, so i dont need 2 lots of internet data packages, think he was trying to say im not allowed to use it?

on the neighbours thing i have 2, 1 guy already punts out his wifi, and the other neighbour i dont know enough to ask him...

can;t find the link right now, but I'll find it when I get home

if you use opera as a browser on your laptop, and install the right extension your mobile provider won't know you're tethered and it'll use your free data

2gig a month should be plenty for forums/emails etc..
