motorbike bits heattube/headset/bearings... erm?
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:51:54 PM »
my electric pedal bike is dieing a slow death.. 40mph is killing it...

so I'm going to build myself a new frame, with front forks from a motocross bike, then a wie frame so I can fit all the batteries etc.. inside it, back wheel sticking further out at the back so I don't keep pulling wheelies and of course... pedals so it's still technically a pedal bike...

so I've nought the forks... now I need a headtube or whatever it's called to join the forks to the rest of the frame... but I have no idea what I need or where to look... everywhere I look has different names for the same stuff... I assumed it would be easy to find one...

the bar which goes inside the tube is 175mm long and 20mm wide

the tapered bearings are 12mm high and 30mm/40mm wide

I'd upload a photo but image shack isn't working properly right now... will try again later

can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Yeh, there're called buses and taxis.

I think I've been nicked for speeding, 34ish in a 30 zone by one of those camera vans, that'll be my first traffic offence since 1963.

I think you should look at monkey bike, Honda Cub or Dax headstocks. Those measurements sound very similar to those models.

are they specially made/machined ?

I thought they would be just like a pedal bike, a bit of tube with a cup which fits in to take the bearing... but I've googled and can't find any :-(

the forks are from a 2010 YZ125... or that's what the seller said anyway!

The bearings should be easy enough to come by. What you really need is the cups that slide into the head stock tube, unless you cut a headstock off a frame, but then youv'e already got the forks.

It might be worth having a browse through some bike building forums. I've seen a thread somewhere on someone changing the tube and cups, but that was a while ago.

I can't find bearing cups anywhere at all... I just assumed I was doing something daft or searching for the wrong thing

guess I could just get a thick tube and turn it out a bit so the bearing will drop into it.... just means I'll have to use a thick heavy tube when I'm trying to save weight  :-(

unless I turned my own cups... but not sure if it'll be worth all the extra work

This is coppied from another forum, and it is quite outdated. They are Royal Enfield specialists, just google Hitchcocks. It could be worth giving them a call anyway. Best I can find at the mo.

As a starting point Hitchcocks have them

Just ring any old supplier and ask them. The racers must be using them all the time, because they tend to go oblong. Here's one local to me. They might be able to tell you something.

If you need to steam clean your willie before you go home, you probably need a doctor........:)

yeah... after googling more it looks like most motorbikes don't have cups for the bearings, the steering stem/tube is case the right size/shape to take the bearings as is

new plan, I've ordered some bearings, when they come I'll measure them, and then get at stem tube the same outer diameter as the outer diameter as the bearings

then get a couple of short bits to slide over those (tight) and then I'll slide those a little bit over the ends of the stem tube and weld them there.... which *should* end up perfect :-)

Just booked my latest 'Speed Awareness Course' today

36 in a 30 limit - on a dual carriageway

Pissed off but 75 notes and no points is OK even if it is half a day of crap.....
