Because, the way I understand it, the Forum is an offshoot of the Wiki, and the Wiki is entirely non commercial, and makes a policy of not mentioning any names of dealers or businesses. The forum has continued with the same philosophy.

I didn't mean a commercial advertising forum for businesses.

What I was talking about was between individual users. For e.g., looks like I'll need a pump for my processor soon http://www.biopowered.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1076.0.html & it would be handy to have a 'wanted' section to see if I could scare one up from someone's pile of bits & pieces.

I'd need to have a heads together with the other admin but if you guys want a for sale and wanted section, why not?  Would have to be strictly biodiesel or veg related though, no selling of kidneys/independent island states.  I know what you lot are like.

It adds to the vibrancy of any forum.

If you do add these sections please make sure you guys set it up so that nobody can reply to the 'For Sale' or 'Wanted' posts - U2U contact only.

If you don't it'll be a constant source of arguments & ill feeling as the time rich sad sabotage forum habitués enhance every post with 'amusing' comments, "How much?! I paid x-90% for mine", "I never have & never will pay for wvo / expertise / knowledge / information" etc, etc, etc.

There is a mod for SMF that adds classified ads.  But this may be way overkill for what we want:

http://www.smfhacks.com/smf-classifieds.php

(The auction part can be turned off)

Edit: Ha scrub that, $79 licence fee for the mod!

Nothing for it Tony, you'll just have to write our own mod.

I think we'll need the auction section  .... we could call it BioBay, and don't forget to build in 20% administration  fees.

OK coupling this request with a thread a while back ... http://www.biopowered.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1000.0.html

What we intend to do is the following ...

1) Create a new board ... Classified ads, BioBay or similar (open to suggestions for a name).  This will be free, strictly for noncommercial adverts from members with bio or veg related  items for sale, free, swap or wanted.  It is not intended for use by members who make or supply bits in their spare time ... see 2) below.   The board will only be visible to members when logged in.  We don't appear to have the facility to restrict access to members over a certain post count, so posts will be accepted at Admins discretion.  We'll put a sticky post up with the details etc, but people joining just to flog expensive oil won't be accepted.

2) This is quite a tricky one as it slightly flies in the face of our no adverts policy.   But there seems to be a desire to have a list of suppliers, where members can detail supplies of hard to find or well priced items.  This can include members who supply bits and pieces on a regular basis if they wish, contact admin and we'll include you.

We intend to locate this "Directory" on the wiki, so only members with wiki editing rights will be able to add to or edit it.  It will be uncategorised so it won't appear in the main wiki index, consequently we may need a convenient link elsewhere to access it easily.  We could preclude it from search engines in the robots.txt file if we wish.

Entries in this directory should not be made by the companies concerned, but on a recommendations basis from members.  Similarly if a member suffers a bad deal or poor service this could be FACTUALLY noted or the vendors entry removed, but that said we certainly don't want to degrage to a "Tripadvisor" level.

So, welcoming members thoughts and suggestions before we go ahead.

EDIT ... I should have said, it was in the second section where we would list the insurance company mentioned in this post ... http://www.biopowered.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1089.0/topicseen.html

That way if they didn't prove advantageous to members they could be expunged!
