Title: trailer mods
Post by: GedsJeep on August 04, 2015, 11:28:01 PM
as you know, i bought a trailer the other day.

although its serviceable, its not quite right.

this is what it looks like now

the draw bar extends from 2 foot to 4 foot and its rated at 435K at the moment.

so any suggestions for must have accessories are welcome.

sort of a communal "design a trailer"

so, first. does a trailer have to be plated, who plates it, how do you get it changed and what happens with home made trailers?

oh, and how do i paint the GRP roof without it cracking when it flexes.

Is that realy big 'laccy bands as a suspension?

Is it German by any chance?
Sure I have seen something similar behind bugs and buses at VW shows

yup . the wheel pivots on the front and the bands restrict the movement.

this is the plate

so french.

this sort of answers a few questions......

French, that explains the quirky suspension then.

Basic, simple, works.
Title: Re: trailer mods
Post by: greasemonkey on August 05, 2015, 09:23:56 PM
A far as I know, you are limited to a 750KG maximum gross weight without brakes. This is providing the tyres and suspension are rated the same, or above.
You can plate it yourself.
There are no special requirements for the strength of the chassis, it just has to be "strong enough"

There is no difference between a home made trailer, and a manufacturer built one. I used to work for a guy who made trailers. Designed and built by him (and me). They were basically home made trailers, we just made lots of them.

Two pack epoxy paint may be a solution for the fibreglass. Key it well, would be my advice.

cheers. was worried about the plate. will have to go with simons figures when he`s done.

anything i MUST have in the design?

im hopefully having a cage across the front to hold 4 of these

anything else?

I can't say definitively, I'm pretty sure you must have a break away chain or cable, to stop the trailer galavanting off down the road if it comes off the hitch. Looks like you already have one on that trailer. It's supposed to be attached to the vehicle by another point, not just looped over the ball.

Lighting regs should be easy enough to find.

You may want to consider you hitch weight. Your ball will be rated, probably 100KG. You may find the rating in the car handbook.
If the trailer is loaded, there must be weight on the hitch, but no more than what it is rated for.
You could easily exceed it with a load of fuel in the wrong place.
This is static mind, not when the vehicle is moving.

Truthfully, the chances of getting caught out by the law on that one are pretty slim, I'd say. Bit different if your towing a couple of tonne, or commercial. Then the ministry get a bit more interested.

I can't think of much else. Number plate, plus light, if you really want to be fussy.

You can get little plastic outriggers, so you can see a narrow trailer in the mirrors. Makes a heck of a difference when reversing, or even going down the road, to be able to see the trailer.

dont know whether to extend it upwards by 12" or not.

gonna order a spare wheel hangar too...

edit**

125kg hitch weight on mine, so with a bit of balancing should be ok.

after the oil, everything else is bulky, but not heavy.

camping chairs, toilet ect...

i could mount it on the roof of the trailer once on site.

is it any good?

Post by: Jamesrl on August 11, 2015, 04:49:52 PM
There's a calculation for working out the size of the draw bar depending on the gross weight of the trailer.

Loading the draw bar with oil could take it way over its designed load limit and fracture, you would want that to happen when flying down a motorway.

I'll see if I can find the calculation for you, I used to design and build custom trailers years ago.

It's funny you should say that I was looking at the Hitch before I sent it down to Simon's on Sunday. It has an extendable drawbar that goes from 24 to 48 inches. There will be 3 jerry cans fixed to the front of it and a couple in the back to even the balance up. Simon is extending the bed forwards as opposed to mounting the platform on the draw bar

If you're refering to the items linked to, yes nice kit. I don't think the side reflectors are required but wouldn't hurt if you fitted'm.

Yes it is the one i have on my caravan. I am very pleased with mine and it works very well. It is also very light compared to a framed panel.

Ged, I have some scales at work which will measure the weight of the trailer for you. they are sunken into the floor, but if you want me to load it up with fuel I can do before you have it back?
Doing the jerry can holders out of ally, so they will be nice and light :-)

so, some progress.

simon stripped the floor and sides off as they were either rotted, or on their way. the chassis was in good nick, but he future proofed it by reinforcing it with extra struts. (25mm box ) section

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150821-WA0002_zpsndkw6usf.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150821-WA0002_zpsndkw6usf.jpg.html)

the floor was replaced with 4mm chequer plate, siliconed and tech screwed all round.

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150821-WA0001_zps9ni5eeze.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150821-WA0001_zps9ni5eeze.jpg.html)

next, the carry box for three jerry cans to carry pump diesel in  :o

again made from 25mm box and 7 inches deep. will have high density foam lining to stop rattle and lateral strap to keep them in place.

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0000_zpsw7sac2pf.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0000_zpsw7sac2pf.jpg.html)

plenty of space to clear the lid.

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0001_zpsavt6iwqi.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0001_zpsavt6iwqi.jpg.html)

and some new sides all round, with the alloy caps and runners replaced.

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0002_zpsqtjpet5y.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG-20150824-WA0002_zpsqtjpet5y.jpg.html)

off to collect it tomorrow, then will sort out the wiring and a few other bits to make it exactly what i want.

more pics soon.

stripped it and wire brushed the chassis down today.

gave it a coat of aldi metal care paint (4:99 per litre)

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2948_zpsgdasi0wu.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2948_zpsgdasi0wu.jpg.html)

then i cracked out the aldi matt silk (nope never heard of it either) dark green and set to work on the sides.

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2950_zpshy6zyilq.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2950_zpshy6zyilq.jpg.html)

three coats each and turned over for the inside. (left over light grey matt silk from aldi, again £4.99 per L)

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2952_zpsbum4a0c4.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2952_zpsbum4a0c4.jpg.html)

then to the GRP roof.

got the sander out and gave it a quick stroke, then more of aldi`s best dark green (3 coats)

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2951_zpsibe5c0ob.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2951_zpsibe5c0ob.jpg.html)

came out ok...

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2955_zpsbyemyhld.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2955_zpsbyemyhld.jpg.html)

and seeing as i still had a third of a tin left i started on the roofbox

(http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx184/gedsjeep/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2953_zpsxjadj4ag.jpg) (http://s754.photobucket.com/user/gedsjeep/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2953_zpsxjadj4ag.jpg.html)

will touch up the black borders on the sides and start putting it back together tomorrow.

yes mate, we even had a bit of room to spare....

the roofbox contains clothes and bedding, the trailer all the camping gear and the dog and kids go in the car with the tent.

too many memories of going camping in tiny cars with boxes resting on my head for hours.....
