Acid wash helped split reluctant glycerin
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:08:59 PM »
Tried something that may be useful to others today ...

Following what I'm sure was the onset of dementia the other day, I left the valves to the settling tank open and spent a good few minutes wondering why the processor wasn't filling.  I'd dumped about 20 ltrs of oil into some nicely settled bio ... Doh!

Any how a 3/27 from a sample off the top and one from the bottom indicated that most of the oil had sunk to the bottom.  So I creamed off the top half and reprocessed the bottom half with additional oil.  I have no idea why but after a 7% wash, the glycerin was very reluctant to split.

I drained as much as I could and decided to carry on washing as normal instead of waiting.  So next step was an acid wash.  The titration worked out at 160 ml of conc sulfuric (for 80 ltrs of bio) as against my usual 20 - 30 ml.  However, from samples taken the now much watered down glycerin splits to a clear interface in just a couple of minutes ... result (most things I try go boosoms up)
