Title: Veg Oil and Petrol
Post by: Islebio on March 17, 2022, 09:09:14 AM
Hi,

I have been making Bio for about 7 years now. I run my Nissan Elgrand 3.2td on it 100% BIO.
Its looking like it may not make it through the next MOT due to rust. I'm thinking of running it on straight filtered waste Veg oil ( dewatered ) with a mix of petrol, say 20-30%. Does anyone have any experience of this? I wont be putting in a two tank/ preheating system.

Cheers

Rod

that % of petrol is IMO far too much. The norm would be more like 10%

If 10% doesn't reduce the viscosity enough then use a % of pump diesel in the mix as well. Remember that when you add petrol to 'average' used oil you get a residue forming at the bottom which is water and other contaminants, so its better to settle for a few days and separate the top layer otherwise you will get the residue in your tank.

yeah 10% max for adding petrol

as above add some diesel if you need it thinner

Rod,

With the cost of both petrol and Diesel going up, why not stick with the bio ?

I'm running approx B80 at the moment. It's a big saving.

Dave.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Great info. I’ve got a jar now sitting with veg oil petrol mix to see what happens in relation to settling. The oil I use tends to be pretty clean and is left settling for a good while. I was thinking of dewatering the veg oil first through my own system. In relation to why not 100% bio im looking at the time and energy usage it takes to make the bio versus paying for the percentage of the tank in petrol and just using the veg oil without doing any work. I’ll see what comes out of this first experiment and take it from there. Thanks again

ok but just remember you can make bio without any heat input at all (as long as you don't water wash so you would need the heat to dry the bio)  I do ambient processing all year round plus there is an intermittent mixing process that requires the pump working for 8 mins max per stage. You need to factor in these savings too.
