Title: A Glyc washing and 'meth loading' of wvo thread... with pics!
Post by: Glycer-rides on July 29, 2013, 10:49:09 PM
How nice to have a whole day on my own, at a nice temp, instead of being rushed and working to the wee hours. The luxury!
Therefore, time to try something I've been meaning to do and photograph it / measure stuff, a bit.

This photos is post glyc wash of 200L of wvo; you can see approx 1/3rd of the glyc. has gone. Nice!

Next to try is....see how much we can load the wvo with meth (suspected watery meth...) Take approx. 10L of the glyc just drained from the glycwash and add about 6L of the meth, thus:

Ooo! it looks like this now.

Introduce via the pre-pump 'hopper' system.

Mix for an hour, stand for another hour and drain carefully... and we get back this. (Ignore the cubie on the left, that's not included.)

Looks like over half the meth has migrated, there's about 10L in that there 200L of oil. Nice! Just to add, around 3% of the wvo volume was 'bio to be recycled'; bio used as parts washer fluid for oily bicycle parts. That extra bio component in the wvo may have assisted the meth to "cross over", i.e. betterer than pure wvo would have...no what I mean?

Mix methoxide, just under 15L for the 180L batch at 16%, first stage (10% wvo removed). Instantly turns to "red diesel". If it's wet meth, as suspected, why turn red? Mixing NaOH and water gives a clear or milky solution? Anyone else had this?

To be continued. Need a beer. For safety reasons.

My bio looks like that in the cans. When it's poured out, it is a yellowy brown colour.

Interesting - does seem to confirm the Meth 50:50 affinity for Glycerol when split from the oil/bio fraction.

The results are up (hmm, beer's nice).
S1 was done with 630g NaOH @ 16%, using just over 14L of meth.
Mixed for an hour, in fact 'educted' at 2 bar, and left to settle after showing 2/3rds conversion, via the 10/90.

S2 was done with 4L of meth (not 6L per formula), and 210g NaoH @ 3.5 g/l.
Mixed for an hour etc...
0.15 ml drop out...so good to go!
Glyc. settled and drained and on to demeth, 'as we speak'

There's an unwritten law of bio brewing; whatever time one starts,  and it could be 6am... it's a 2 am finish! Quid pro Quo.
