Title: Cotten wool dropout in 10/90
Post by: Head Womble on April 28, 2013, 07:23:07 PM
Has anyone had this before

There's 0.5ml of cotten wool looking dropout in my 10/90 test,
this was/is a clear pass that's been sat for over a week,
it's not the first time I've seen this, but I've only seen it when using ASM.

Sorry I can't get any close up photos with my camera.

Is that still there at 20°C Mark? It could be temperature related.

It's sat on the radiator now, so I'll let you know later.

Well how coincidental, I've had exactly the same on my last two batches. As far as I could see it is temp related.

I took a 200ml sample of finished Bio and it has the same sort of stuff settled out.

So I'm not the only one.

Um, I've not checked the bio it's self, but it's now sat in my drum ready for use and I can't see the bottom.

No, it's in the bubble/setting tank.

I've seen that over winter period in my 90/10. When the sample cools down it starts to appear. It is temperature related. Warm it up and it goes away. I assumed it was HMPE.

I kept it inside the house since yesterday and allthough a small amount is still present, most of it has gone.

Bill, what catalyst do you use ?

I use ASM but I have seen this when I was using KOH. Only see it during the winter when my 90/10 sample chills to near 0 C. Not sure if its any worst with ASM.

Also saw this in my sample jar that is kept outside but it's disappearing as it warms up (ASM user too)

I have seen this too. Only really noticed this year in the new measuring tube. I have also had it in finished bio filter to 1 micron

I get it with every palm oil batch I make unless I leave the glycerol to settle for a long time before testing.
Dont tend to see it with liquid oil feedstock though.

Jules, I am using runny oil with perhaps a tad of palm in the mix. If I leave it a while to settle I end up with about a litre of white hmpe at the bottom of the settling tank
