Aim

This trial is suggested by Twenty4Seven. It's not scientific, but may be interesting if enough members participate. The aim is to see if there's any noticeable change in biodiesel due to possible oxidisation. Please feel free to participate, the more people contributing the better. You'll need wiki editing rights to participate so please contact one of the admin team if your status needs upgrading. You can PM them on the forum using one of the links at the top of thispage.

Method

Oxidisation test.jpg

Put about 2-3mm depth of biodiesel into an uncovered, shallow dish, set aside and report any changes ... colour, viscosity etc. In the initial observations try and list the type of feed stock used, the production method and type of washing if any.

If possible include a dish with copper pieces and one with iron, as per photo right.

Observations should be made once a week.

Julian 24-5-2015 3 jam jar lids set outside but under cover. 1 copper, 1 cast iron, 1 straight bio. Bio made from circa 50% whites caught in filters over winter. 2 stage, titrated process, demethed, glycerol+water wash, pumped acid wash followed by 4 straight pump washes. 31-5-2015 No noticeable changes except the bio containing copper wire has turned green. 7-6-2015 Again little change. Certainly no more viscus, green has perhaps faded a little. 14-6-2015 No noticeable change. 20-6-2015 All samples may have evaporated a little. Bio appears lighter in colour and there are signs of rusty coloured bio around the iron. 24-7-2015 See photo below. Cu staining quite marked as is the rust colour around the iron. None seem any more viscous, but the pure bio sample seems lighter in colour.
Dgs 23-5-2015 2x petri dishes set up on my workbench. 1 straight bio, 1 with a small piece of steel. Partial sunlight. Bio made from good quality rapeseed plus @ 30% new soy. bubbled, settled and dried. Soap <20ppm Water 150ppm. 26.7.15 Sample with the piece of steel has dark coloured bio around it. The straight bio sample has not changed colour but is more viscous (I can now turn it upside down) TBA TBA TBA TBA
