Question for veg runners regarding fuel temperatures.
« on: October 07, 2012, 02:02:24 PM »
Thinking specifically of a Bosch R509 (300 TDI Discovery), but any details on any IP will do.

What is the highest temperature anyone has run an IP over a protracted period.  Both peak temperatures and continuous running.

Why?  Didn't seem an unreasonable question to me.

I'm always curious when I get asked a question if there's no obvious reason for it.

Just seemed to me as being another vague question by Julianf the like of which we see on the VOD all the time.

Why does he need to know why you need to know?? Hence the "FFS" post

Who are you and what have you done with that nice chap Nige?

I don't really have an issue with that.  I just took it as inquisitiveness.  If anything it was discourteous of me to ask a question without explaining why I was asking.

The reason I didn't was that I hadn't really formulated a creditable theory as to why the car is poorly, still not sure that I have but, at the risk of "in coming" from the Cotswold's for starting a car repair thread, I'll start a new one!

That "nice" chap is still here. Maybe I'm just a bit fed up of, what i see as, pointless posts. I've seen so many on the VOD over the years and a tad disappointed to them start over here when the VOD is down.

No, to be precise, you posted it after my post in which i discussed Julian's electric fuel filter mod (which i was able to do *after* knowing why he needed to know).

I commented that, without a solenoid on the water feed, i did not think that the electric element could heat the fuel to the point of danger, as it would always be kept under control by the coolant flow.  I later expanded on this by PM to include the comment that, after a long trip in a 100% stock car, most of the stuff under the bonnet was pretty hot anyhow, which would include the IP.

Anyhow, In follow up to Julian's initial question -

I commented on the other forum the other day that there are bosh spin on filters that are marked as 'heated' as opposed to standard.  Someone mentioned that their (i assume) stock filter was breaking up at elevated temperature.  This may be something to consider?

Nigel - you've had threads locked in the past for going after people.  I'm well aware that I'm one of your current sources of 'entertainment', but, as I tend to find life easier if I keep away from people looking for trouble, I fully intend this to be my last post on the matter, no matter how many PM's you send me saying "Did you get my message Julian? Or do I need to send it again."

Oh dear, I was typing this before Julian's reply beat me to it.  I'll post it anyway, but it's the last I'm going to get involved ...

Is it kiss and makeup time with everyone respecting each others views and not getting too heated about it.

howdy folks

my van (twin tanked with FPHE) fluctuates between 70/85c, this range in fluctuation is due to the windchill factor (ambient temps/speed of travel/no insulation of FPHE/position in engine bay) etc. ive only done 2000 odd ish miles like this maybe 3000 miles-ish, even at this temp oil maybe alot thinner but the old IP knows its oil as i still get diesel knock / slightly... more noticeable on colder engine.

my car pug 406 has the modified filter housing but to date i have never taken temps for this, chug has and done tests and its been said the fuel sees a 10c rise in temp, everything else standard with the fuel system.

as an 100% veg oil runner, i know hotter runs better and starts alot better!

what i do know about discos and veg running is the disco hate starting in winter with veg oil, they smoke alot with high percentages of oil to diesel ratios, but at 50/50 run very well. one chap said his 300 TDI (is it really an I?) went better on oil with alot more compression and was like having a turbo and could overtake cars very easily...
