Could somebody explain something about dpf's for me. I understand that the filter collect and store the particles. When the regen takes place the burnt particles are then "re burnt" to make smaller particles and it is then pumped out for folk to breath in. Is that right or am I missing something?

that's right

it's a filter in the exhaust that catches crap

once it starts to plug up, ECU waits till engine/exhaust is up to temperature then injects a bit of diesel on the exhaust stroke sending some unburnt diesel down the exhaust

unburnt diesel gets to the dpf and burns, burning the crap the it has caught

So it's not a filter at all...more like a holding chamber until the burnt particles get "re burnt" for folk to breath in. What, exactly, is the point?

it's a filter that catches bd stuff, then you burn the bad stuff so it's harmless or small enough to be harmless

I don't know the chemistry etc. behind it, what they really filter out or what they turn it into tbh

So you burn stuff thats already burnt that was bad for people to breath in and then release it in smaller particle sizes.....for people to breath in....but because it's smaller it's ok. Really!!

This is one example of a more detailed explanation: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/emissions/diesel-particulate-filters/
I know there are multiple approaches to the dpf, some just use axtra injection from the standard injectors, some have adedicated injector for the dpf, some reqiure additives (Ad Blue?) for the vehicle.

The main objective is to emit much less PM10, & 2.5,

Many are alos likely to also have a catalyst to reduce NOx
