I thought I would write a formula for Ethyl Alcohol that might be useful to the UK . There are natural gas wells over there in the UK . Separate the ethane from natural gas . React it with sulfuric acid to get ethylene . React the ethylene with water at high pressure and temperature to get ethyl alcohol , industrial grade ethanol . I believe there was a factory in Pasadena , Texas , USA , near Houston that was making ethyl alcohol from natural gas . This is a formula a professor taught the organic chemistry class I was in about 30 years ago . The cost of the ethanol was less than ten USA dollars per gallon a few years ago . It might be convenient to have a lot of ethanol rather than ethane considering storage requirements and cost . The might have been a mineral acid catalyst when reacting water with ethylene , I'm not sure of that detail
